ALLENDALE, Mich.— Colorado Mesa University's
Tony Torres took third in the 1,500 meters while
Gunner Rigsby finished seventh in the triple jump to earn podium positions and first team all-America honors at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday here on the campus of Grand Valley State University.
Spencer Purnell also advanced to the triple jump finals and nabbed second team all-America honors with a ninth-place finish while
Josie Coffey wrapped up the Mavericks' 2021 season in the women's high jump.
In the 1,500 meters, which started tactically, Torres moved up from the back half of the pack on the third lap into fourth place before moving up a spot on the final stretch, clocking a final time of three minutes, 53.25 seconds, just 0.30 behind winner James Young of Academy of Art (3:52.95), who edged Concordia St.-Paul's Benjamin Allen (3:52.96) by a single one-hundredth of a second in a thrilling finish.
Torres is now a 2-time all-American after finishing second in the mile at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March.
Earlier in the triple jump, Rigsby and Purnell both turned in their best marks in the opening round of the second flight while holding on for their final positions. Rigsby turned in a mark of 15.28 meters (50 feet, 1 ¾ inches) on his opening attempt. He then fouled on his second jump and passed on his remaining four.
Purnell, who was also making his NCAA Championship debut, tallied a mark of 15.06 meters (49-5) to earn a spot in the finals but was unable to improve in the remaining rounds.
With eight team points— six from Torres and two from Rigsby— the Maverick men finished in a tie for 30
th in the final team standings.
Coffey, the lone Maverick woman to compete on Saturday missed on all three of her attempts at the opening height of 1.65 meters (5-5) as did three others in the field of 16.
