PUEBLO, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University heptathlete
Mica Jenrette dominated the 800 meters and claimed the overall victory while
Sierra Arceneaux broke her own weeks-old school-record in the 200 meters as they led the Maverick women's track and field team at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships, which continued Saturday here at CSU Pueblo's Neta and Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl.
The 800-meter portion of the heptathlon was moved until 8:15 p.m., several hours after the other Day 2 events to avoid the hot conditions on the middle day of the meet, which wraps up Sunday.
The Maverick women added 19 points to their team total on Saturday and stand in seventh place with 24 points through eight scored events, although they have many of their best events to come. Jenrette claimed ten of those with her heptathlon win while
Kiana Jackson and
Chian DeLoach finished third and sixth in the triple jump, respectively, to combine for the other nine earlier in the day.
Jenrette finished the heptathlon with 4,815 points, just five shy of her 3-week old school-record, while winning the competition by 359 points. On Saturday, she jumped 5.30 meters (17-4.5) in the long jump and threw the javelin 27.82 meters (91-3), but slipped to second place overall.
However, the outdoor redshirt freshman from Los Lunas, New Mexico cruised to a season-best time of 2:21.51 in the 800, dominating the rest of the 11-woman field. She won the race by more than seven seconds and scored 803 points to claim the overall victory as 6-event leader Taneika Elliston of New Mexico Highlands slipped back to fourth overall. Jenrette's 800-meter time puts her sixth in CMU outdoor history. She set the Mavs' indoor 800-meter school-record of 2:16.59 to earn all-America honors in the pentathlon after winning the RMAC pentathlon crown.
Meanwhile, Arceneaux posted a time of 23.96 seconds to qualify first in the 200 meters. That time was quicker than her previous CMU standard of 24.01, set at last month's Maverick Multi & Open, the same meet where Jenrette set her school-record of 4,820 points.
Arceneaux also set the CMU record in the 100 meters and will be the top seed in both sprinting finals on Sunday.
Teammate
Haley Golden also posted a time of 25.23 to move up one spot to sixth on CMU's all-time top performers list in the 200. She was 11
th on the day.
The Mavericks also qualified two hurdlers for the 100-meter finals on Sunday as
Averie Griffith (14.90) and Jackson (14.92) qualified fourth and fifth, respectively. Griffith's time was a career-best and moved her up two spots to sixth in program history. Jackson ranks fifth in Maverick history with a PR of 14.76.
Jackson was also busy on the jumping runway later in the day. The school-record holder turned in a mark of 12.13 meters (39-9.75) to take the bronze medal. DeLoach, who finished fourth in Friday's long jump, took sixth in the triple jump with an effort of 11.92 meters (39-1.25).
Maison Tolle also had a good day, taking 11
th with a first attempt effort of 11.06 meters (36-3.5) to move into the No. 6 spot in CMU history for the discipline behind DeLoach, who ranks third.
The discus throw and pole vault competitions were also held on Saturday, as were preliminary heats of the 800 meters. In the discus, freshman
Meleeah Holmes-McKown finished 17
th with a effort of 34.09 meters (111-10).
Lydia Dawson finished 11
th in the pole vault after clearing 3.09 meters (10-1.5), moving past teammate
Morgan Badgley into third in CMU history. Badgley missed on all three of her attempts at 2.94 meters (9-7.75) on Saturday.
In the 800,
Amber Valdez placed 14
