PUEBLO, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University sprinting sensation
Sierra Arceneaux smashed the Mavericks' 100-meter school record to help lead the Maverick women on Friday, the first of three days at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships here at the Neta and Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl.
Meanwhile,
Mica Jenrette scored 2,934 points in the first four events of the heptathlon to open a 203-point lead. She is also three points ahead of her school-record pace set three weeks ago.
Arceneaux posted a time of 11.57 seconds in her preliminary hear and ranks amongst the nation's top 10 sprinters. She was easily the top qualifier for Sunday's final. With her time that moved her past
Brooklynn York (11.73) and
Whitney Rowe (11.74) for the fastest wind-legal time in Maverick history. York (11.51) and Rowe (11.56) did turn in slightly quicker wind-aided times in their all-America careers.
Haley Golden finished just outside the 9-runner final in tenth place with a time of 12.42.
Meanwhile, freshman
Jade Wimmer clocked a time of 57.20 seconds to qualify seventh in the 400 meters. She moved up a spot to third in Maverick history with that preliminary round effort.
Sophie Lindauaer (57.72) and
Jordyn Pittman (57.79) also set new PRs to take the No. 6 and 7 spots in program history. They finished just outside the finals qualifying spots in tenth and 11
th, respectively.
Averie Griffith also shaved a hundreth of a second off her PR in the 400-meter hurdles qualifying fifth for the finals in 1:04.18.
Elsewhere, the Mavericks received their five team points of the day from
Chian DeLoach, who placed fourth in the long jump with a PR and NCAA provisional qualifying leap of 5.92 meters (19-5.25), improving her No. 2 positioning in CMU history behind Rowe, the school-record holder.
Kierra Arceneaux finished tenth at 5.48 meters (17-11.75) while
Kaley St. Peter moved into a tie for ninth in program history with an 11
th place finish and jump of 5.37 meters (17-7.5).
Two others were also contested on the day.
In the hammer throw, freshman
Meleeah Holmes-McKown finished tenth with a personal-best mark of 44.73 meters (146-9).
Lindsay Parsons placed 14
th in the 10,000 meters with a PR time of 40:57.82, which moved her up a spot to fourth in program history.
In the heptathlon, Jenrette fared best in the 11-woman field in the first two events and was second and third best in the other two events off the day. She won the 100-meter hurdles in 15.22 seconds to score 759 points before expanding her lead with a high jump clearance of 1.62 meters (5-3.75). She then took second in the shot put with a season-best mark of 10.56 meters (34-7.75) before closing out the day with a personal-best time of 26.01 seconds in the 200 meters, third best in the field.
Teammate Jordyn Brockman is in ninth place overall with 2,382 points. She was third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.63 and sixth in the 200 meters at 27.00 seconds. She also cleared 1.41 meters (4-7.5 in the long jump) and tossed the shot put 7.81 meters (25-7.5).
