GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University's
Thiago Nejm came from 4-3 down in the third set to take his No. 5 singles match, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 over Josh Williams as the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks rallied for a clutch 4-3 non-conference men's tennis win over Dallas Baptist University in the Mavericks' home-opener on Tuesday at the Elliott Tennis Center.
The Mavericks also received a key win from normal reserve
Chapin Schott in the No. 6 singles match coming from 3-2 down in the team score to defeat the previously unbeaten Patriots, who are now 5-1.
The Mavericks (6-5) had dropped four straight duals coming into the day but enjoyed being at home for the first time in 11 matches this season and for the first time since Sept. 28, 2019 in total.
Moises Cure and
Jandre van Wyk were also singles winners for the Mavericks while van Wyk had teamed with
Steven Howe for a No. 1 doubles victory. Howe and van Wyk were 6-4 winners of Gabe Garrido and Williams.
However, DBU managed to win the doubles point taking both the No. 2 and 3 matches in a tie-breakers.
The Mavericks would answer back to take a 2-1 lead in the overall dual as van Wyke bested Hunter Terrell, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 singles while Cure managed to come from a set behind to defeat Garrido, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in a 3-set, No. 3 affair.
The Patriots then won the next two completed matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles both in three sets to re-take the team lead, 3-2.
However, Schott, included in the team lineup for the first team in his career, then dominated Joshua Ramos for a 6-0, 6-3 No. 6 singles win.
Meanwhile, Nejm was battling with the entire team result on the line, pulling out his victory.
The CMU men are now slated to be off for nearly a month before resuming their season with an Apr. 3 scrimmage against Seward County Community College and officially on Apr. 9 at MSU Denver.
