Maverick men fall to No. 8 Cougars, Eagles

CMU returns home to face DBU in home-opener

AZUSA, Calif.— Moises Cure won at No. 4 single while Steven Howe and Jandre van Wyk won at No. 2 doubles to lead the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks in Saturday morning action against eight-ranked Azusa Pacific University here at the Munson & Bavougain Tennis Complex.  However, their victories were not enough as the Mavericks went down to the Cougars, 6-1.

CMU then traveled to La Mirada and were defeated by Biola, 7-0 in another PacWest match as they slipped to 5-5 overall while finishing up a 3-match swing through southern California, 0-3.

Against the Cougars, Cure won over Ethan Smith, 7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 7-5 giving the Mavericks their lone point of the weekend.  In doubles, Howe and van Wyk were 7-6 (7-5) winners over Smith and Dylan Parsley although APU won the other two doubles matches by 6-1 scores to take the doubles point and momentum into singles play.

Against Biola, Howe and van Wyk were again winners at No. 2 doubles, as they took down Isaac Cordova and Alex Sedeno, 6-4.  The Mavericks were not able to win any singles matches, although Tyler Landen and Thiago Nejm both won sets taking their No. 3 and 6 singles matches to third sets.  Landen fell 6-0, 1-6, 7-6 (8-6) to Sebastian Herrera in the third flight while Nejm won the first set over Andres Meneses, 6-3 before falling 6-0 in the second.  With the overall outcome of the dual already determined, Nejm then lost the super tie-breaker, 10-8.

The Mavericks will return home and will play host to Dallas Baptist in their season-opener on Tuesday at 11 a.m. on the Elliott Tennis Center courts.
