GRAND ISLAND, Neb.— The Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team swept a season-opening doubleheader against Oklahoma Baptist University on Friday here in the Grand Island Tennis Center.
The Mavericks posted a 6-1 win in the morning and a 5-2 victory in the afternoon match.
CMU swept the doubles matches in both affairs and went a combined 8-0 in the No. 3-6 singles positions throughout the day as
Moises Cure,
Steven Howe,
Thiago Nejm and
Jandre van Wyk all went a perfect 4-0 against the Bison.
CMU 6, OBU 1 (Morning)
The Mavs seized early control as
Christian Albrechtsen and
Tyler Landen tallied a 6-1 No. 1 doubles win over Kaye-Den Tan and Aaron Brewer before Howe and van Wyk edged Christian Siegle and Matthew Ford in the second flight. Cure and Nejm also bested Carson Thoma and Kyler Melton in the No. 3 doubles match.
In singles play, the Mavericks claimed victory in all three of the matches that went to a third-set tiebreaker after the teams had split decisions in the first two completed matches to make the team score 2-1.
Cure came from a set down in his No. 4 singles 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10-4) win over Siegle before Howe finished off Tan, 13-11 in a thrilling tie-breaker at No. 2 singles. Meanwhile, Nejm dominated the first set and the tie-breaker in his No. 6 win over Thoma, which was by a 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-2) margin.
Van Wyk also cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Melton at No. 5 singles.
Chapin Schott also recorded a 6-4 exhibition win over Adam Spencer.
"We had a good start sweeping the doubles matches and keeping the momentum into singles," Maverick Coach
Dan MacDonald said. "We played smart, aggressive tennis when it was there and played defense when needed."
CMU 5, OBU 2 (Afternoon)
The Mavericks were again dominant in doubles play as Albrechtsen and Landen were nearly flawless in their 6-0 No. 1 win over Siegle and Ford while Nejm and Cure bested Tan and Brewer, 6-3 at No. 2. Howe and van Wyk were 6-1 winners over Thoma and Melton in the third flight.
However, the Bison would come back to take a 2-1 lead as Tan and Brewer switches positions to win the top two flights.
Cure, who moved up a rung to No. 3, then finished off Ford for a 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-4) victory to even dual at 2 before the Mavericks swept the bottom three flights to complete the victory. Landen defeated Siegl with a pair of 6-2 set wins while van Wyk cruised past Thoma, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles.
Nejm was victorious over Melton, 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 6 match.
"We took care of business. Moises really battled back to win in three and turn the momentum back in our favor," MacDonald said.
The Mavericks will look to complete a perfect 3-0 weekend when the play NAIA Hastings College on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. CST (10 a.m. Mountain).
