GRAND ISLAND, Neb.— The Colorado Mesa University men's tennis squad won every set in a comfortable 7-0 win over Hastings College on Saturday morning here at the Grand Island Tennis Center. The victory allowed the Mavericks to complete a perfect 3-0 season-opening weekend and get off to an unbeaten 3-match start for the first time since the fall of 2012.
The Mavericks doubles teams all won for the third straight match while
Moises Cure,
Thiago Nejm and
Jandre van Wyk all remained perfect in singles play as well in the bottom half of the Coach
Dan MacDonald's lineup.
Cure was a 6-2, 6-0 win over Thane Waite at No. 4 singles after teaming with Nejm for a No. 3 double wins over David Looms and Ryan Hunter. Van Wyk also partnered with
Steven Howe for a 6-2 No. 2 doubles victory over the Broncos' Hunter Royal and Waite before cruising past Loomis without giving up a game (6-0, 6-0) in the No. 5 singles affair.
Nejm also "bageled" Hunter in the No. 6 singles match.
Earlier,
Christian Albrechtsen and
Tyler Landen clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 No. 1 victory over Josh Sodorff and Hayden Royal.
In singles play, Landen kept the momentum going with a 6-0, 6-2 No.3 singles win over Hunter Royal before Howe defeated Hayden Royal, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Albrechtsen had to battle in the first set of his No. 1 singles match against Sodorff, winning it 7-5. The second set was much more straight forward and went Albrechtsen's way, by a 6-1 margin.
Chapin Schott also picked up an 8-0 pro-set exhibition singles win over Wyatt Kohles.
The Mavericks will look to continue their momentum on Friday when they travel to Surprise, Arizona to face another NAIA opponent in Ottawa University-Arizona.
