PHOENIX— Led by 4-0 days from
Steven Howe and
Jandre van Wyk, the Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team claimed a pair of Saturday wins, taking down Western New Mexico, 6-1 in nearby Surprise before squeaking out a 4-3 win here at the Phoenix Tennis Center over Arizona Christian.
Tyler Landen and
Thiago Nejm, now a perfect 6-0 in singles play, also went 2-0 in the singles play throughout the day for the Mavericks, who improved to 5-1 on the season.
Colorado Mesa 6, Western New Mexico 1
The Mavericks swept the doubles matches as Howe and van Wyk cruised to a 6-1 No. 2 win over Jace Crawford and Lazius Brown before Landen and
Christian Albrechtsen took a 6-4 win over the Mustangs' Jonathon Vega and Joaquin Delpino in the top flight.
Moises Cure and Nejm were also 6-4 winners of Rodrigo Mere and Erik Dallman at No. 3 doubles.
CMU continued the momentum into singles play taking the wins at No. 2-6.
Howe was a 6-1, 6-2 winner of Delpino at No. 2 while Landen won a first-set tiebreaker, 7-3, before winning second set 6-3 over Mere.
Cure defeated Dallman, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 while van Wyk cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Crawford at No. 5 singles. Nejm finished off the dual with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Brown.
WNMU's lone win came from Vega in the top singles flight and that came in a third set tiebreaker after he squeaked out a 9-7 first set tiebreaker over Albrechtsen, who was a 6-3 second set winner.
Colorado Mesa 4, Arizona Christian 3
The Mavericks played from a point down after the Firestorm (1-2) claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and 3.
However, van Wyk dominated Leon Oliver, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles to even the match before the Firestorm went back up 2-1 thanks to a No. 1 singles win (6-2, 6-4) by Anthony Popyrin over Albrechtsen.
The Mavericks then went on to win the next three completed matches with Howe, Landen and Nejm all claiming victories. Howe won 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) over Jose Dominguez while Landen needed three sets to beat Andres Vasquez in what was the dual-clincher. Nejm also had a hard-fought 6-4, 7-5 win over David Maas.
Howe and van Wyk were also victorious at No. 2 doubles as they took down Jonas Wand and David Maas, 6-3.

The Mavericks will face a tough challenge next weekend as they will face a pair of NCAA Division I foes in Utah. On Saturday, they will be at Utah State in Logan before heading to Ogden for a Sunday encounter at Weber State. Both matches are slated for 11 a.m. starts.
