No. 7 Mavs sweep Cougars to improve to 5-0

Vogt, Foutz, Schmidt lead balanced attack

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Freshman right side hitter Gabrielle Vogt recorded 13 kills and hit a career-best .571 while outside hitters Maddi Foutz and Holly Schmidt each tallied double-doubles to lead the nation's seventh-ranked Colorado Mesa University Maverick volleyball team to a 3-set sweep of visiting Colorado Christian University in a Friday matinee Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match in Brownson Arena.

The Mavericks hit .306 as a team in the 25-21, 25-21, 26-24 victory and improved to 5-0 overall and to 2-0 in conference matches.  The Cougars fell to 0-2 (0-2 RMAC) despite a solid 13-kill effort from Breanna Allen, who also hit .321.

The Mavs had a 50-37 advantage in total kills as Foutz put down 12 while recording 11 digs to register her fourth consecutive double-double.  Schmidt had opposite numbers with 11 kills and 12 digs as she tallied her third of the season.

Freshman setter Sabrina VanDeList also played well tallying a career-high 28 assists with a .519 set percentage to go along with eight digs while sophomore Savannah Spitzer tallied seven kills while hitting .400 in the middle.

Defensively, libero Emily Tucker tallied a match-high 18 digs for the seconds straight match while Haley Hahn was involved in all three of CMU's blocks.

The Mavericks hit .417 as a team in the first set and used a 6-0 and 8-1 run with Tucker behind the service line to seize a 20-15 lead.  The teams then exchanged points for the rest of set as Foutz, who recorded two, and Vogt put down kills to finish off the opening set.

The Mavericks also fell behind early in the second set but had a nice 6-1 run with VanDeList behind the service line to take a 13-11 lead.

The Cougars would tie the set at 14 but then committed one of their six service errors sparking the Mavericks, who never trailed the rest of the way.

The Cougars could get within 19-18 on a Leielle Salinger kill before a Maverick block by Hahn and Maranda Theleus started another 3-0 stretch that helped CMU put the set away on a Foutz kill after a call was reversed on a successful replay challenge by Maverick Coach Dave Fleming.

The third set proved to be the most interesting as the Mavericks once again used a substantial 5-0 run to take a 19-16 lead before the Cougars battled back to take a 22-21 lead.

However, a Cougar serve error killed the momentum as CCU's Jacey Johnson and Spitzer exchanged kills to make it 23-23.  Vogt then put down a kill to give the Mavs' a match point, which was thwarted by a Jasa Scheierman kill, which tied the set at 24.

However, the Vogt again put CMU up 25-24 with her 13th kill before Hahn finished off a Cougar free ball of a set from VanDeList to clinch the match.

The Mavericks will be on the road next Saturday (Feb. 20) playing in a 3-team RMAC pod in Rapid City, South Dakota, where they will face Fort Lewis and host South Dakota Mines at 2 and 5 p.m., respectively.
