Box Score OREM, Utah – The Colorado Mesa women's basketball team had a bad third quarter and let Division I Utah Valley slip away with a 62-50 win in an exhibition game at the UCCU Center.
Colorado Mesa had a strong first half as they took a 36-32 lead into the halftime break. They shot 47 percent from the field and were 8-for-13 from beyond the arc.
Mariah Martin and
Kelsey Siemons each had 12 points in the half.
Then, Colorado Mesa went ice cold.
The Mavericks were outscored 16-3 in the third quarter and went 8:55 without a point until Martin drained a free-throw with 4:51 to go in the quarter to snap a scoreless streak. Their first field goal of the third quarter came at 2:39 on a make by Martin.
In the end, they were outscored 30-14 in the second half. The Mavericks shot just 29 percent for the game.
The bright spot was the three-point shooting improved. They made nine three-pointers in the game, nearly matching their season total for made threes (10).
Martin led the Mavericks with a team-high 15 points and added eight rebounds and five assists. Siemons had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Utah Valley's Josie Williams caused problems all night for the Mavericks. The 6-5 center finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds to lead everyone in the game in both categories.
The Mavericks will host Southwestern Assemblies of God American Indian College (SAGU AIC) on Friday to open the Holiday Inn Thanksgiving Classic in Brownson Arena.
