ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Colorado Mesa women's golf team opened their final tournament of the fall on Monday (Oct. 18) at the Nick Turner Invitational, hosted by Fort Lewis at Arroyo Del Oso Golf Course.
The Mavericks opened the tournament with their best single round team score of the year at 19-over, 307 and are sitting in seventh place in the team standings. They are the second highest RMAC team in the standings behind fourth place UCCS and are 15 strokes behind first round leader St. Mary's.
Elly Walters is in a tie for 13
th on the overall leaderboard at 2-over, 74 in her first round. The Rifle, Colo. native played solid as she had two birdies, two bogeys and just one 'bad' hole, the par-5, No. 11 that she double bogeyed.
She is just two strokes off the lead set by St. Mary's teammates Sofia Ruescas and Estelle Beck at 2-under, 70.
Crystle Querol finished as the Mavericks No. 2 golfer and had a great comeback day. After struggling through the fall, Querol posted a 4-over, 76 in her first round. She had three bogeys, a double and one birdie that came on the par-3, No. 4.
The Mavericks are scheduled to tee off at 8:30am tomorrow and will be paired with CSU Pueblo and Cal State East Bay.
