FRESNO, Calif.— The Colorado Mesa University doubles duo of redshirt sophomore Jandre van Wyk and freshman Tegan Hartman main draw quarterfinals to lead the Maverick men's tennis team's efforts at the ITA West Regional Championships, which got underway Thursday.
 
The Mavs won five matches on the first of three days of the tournament, hosted by Fresno Pacific University at the Sunbirds' Haak Tennis Complex and nearby Sunnyside High School and also still have four men still alive in the consolation singles brackets.  Christian Albrechtsen and Moises Cure are also still alive in the men's doubles consolation bracket.
 
Van Wyk and Hartman, seeded seventh, received a bye in the first round of the men's doubles draw and then posted an 8-2 win over Alex Sedeno and Tomas Gomez of Biola in the Round of 16.  They are due to face third-seeded Tyler Davis and Nabeel Khan of Point Loma Nazarene on Friday afternoon. 
 
That same Sea Lion duo took out CMU's Steven Howe and Jorge Abreu in the second round on Thursday after Howe and Abreu had won their opening match, 8-3 over Concordia-Irvine's Adam Large and Sofian Tayebi Alaoui.
 
Elsewhere, Cure and Albrechtsen dropped their opening round match before receiving two byes to be pushed through to the consolation quarterfinals.
 
In singles, Albrechtsen won his opening round match over Fresno Pacific's Lucas Heinke, 6-1, 6-3, before being dispatches by 12^th-seeded Andres Meneses of Biola by a 6-3, 6-3 score in the Round of 32.
 
Howe, seeded 13^th, received a bye in the first round and then fall to FPU's Joshua Wong.  The other four Mavericks were beaten in their opening round singles matches, two of which went to split-set tie-breakers.
 
He, Van Wyk and Hartman are still alive in the consolation bracket after receiving byes and walkover victories and will play Round of 16 matches on Friday.
