FRESNO, Calif.— Competing in her home state, Colorado Mesa University freshman Makenna Livingston won a pair of singles matches and advanced to the Round of 16 in the women's singles main draw, the unquestioned highlight of the Maverick women's tennis team's day on Thursday here at the ITA West Regional Championships.
 
The Huntington Beach native upset the No. 12 seed Maria Vittoria Casucci of the Academy of Art, 7-5, 6-2 in the first round and then claimed a tight 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) victory over Casucci's teammate Erica Hellbe in the Round of 32.
 
She will take on No. 7 seed Arianna Audelo of Point Loma Nazarene in her next on Friday. 
 
Meanwhile, Livingston and Maike Waldburger, one of three Mavericks still alive in the singles consolation draw, also claimed an 8-1 opening round doubles victory over Holy Names' Deimante Bulatovaite and Ella Lavendar.
 
Halle Romero and Issy Coman also won their Round of 32 doubles match over Dominican's Alexandria Rodgers and Antoinette Schreiber of Dominican, 8-1.  However, they were defeated by top-seeded Colbyshae Emery and Mary Bracia of Biola in the second round.  Waldburger and Livingston defaulted their second round match against a fifth-seeded MSU Denver pair.
 
In the consolation singles draw, Waldburger won her first round match over Biola's Brooke Fager, 6-4, 6-2 after falling in a 3-set match to Cal State LA's Sarah Olmos in the main draw.  Julianna Campos and Coman are also still alive after receiving byes and will play Round of 16 matches on Friday.
 
The tournament, being hosted by Fresno Pacific University, continues through Saturday.
