GOLDEN, Colo. – In the dual with two of the favorites to claim the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference crown, it came down to the final bout with Colorado School of Mines claiming the win in the bout and the dual, 24-18.
 
The Mavericks and Orediggers each claimed five bouts in the dual but four of five of the Oredigger wins went for bonus points.
 
Colorado Mesa earned the win in the first three bouts of the dual. Cian Apple (125), Collin Metzgar (133) and Daniel Magaña (141) all picked up decision victories to stake the Mavericks to a 9-0 lead.
 
Mines went back-to-back with bonus point wins at 149 and 157 pounds to put the Orediggers in the lead 11-9.
 
Colorado Mesa claimed a pair of matches by bonus points with a major decision at 165 pounds and a technical fall at 197 pounds.
 
No. 5 ranked Fred Green earned his second straight win over a nationally ranked opponent in the dual. Green won by major decision over No. 11 Skylar Lykins 15-4 moving his all-time record against him to 3-0. The Boise State transfer fell behind early but pushed the pace to earn the bonus point victory.
 
The Mavericks fell at 174 and 184 pounds to setup the dramatics in the final two bouts.
 
Donnie Negus was surgical in his match with Nolan Funk at 197 pounds. Negus surrendered just four escape points while earning a pair of four point nearfalls and nearly earned a pin in two separate occasions during the bout. He finally picked up the technical fall at 20-4.
 
Nationally ranked No. 5 Weston Hunt picked up the pin at 285 pounds to give Mines the dual win.
 
The Mavericks will be back in action on February 11 for the Battle in Brownson against arch-rival Western Colorado.
