GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— What a difference a day makes.
A day after being held to just three runs in Saturday's two games, the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks exploded for 19 on Sunday as shutouts by pitcher
Paige Adair, who threw a 1-hitter, and
Shea Mauser also helped the Mavericks claim 11-0 and 8-0 run-rule victories over the visiting Colorado School of Mines Orediggers here at the CMU Softball Stadium.
The victories, both of which came in just five innings, allowed the Mavericks (16-6) to move back into a first place tie in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings at 10-2. The Orediggers, who won Saturday's games 2-1 and 5-2, fell to 9-12 and 6-6 in the RMAC.
The Mavericks used big innings to do the same putting up three or more runs in four different innings throughout the doubleheader sweep that allowed them to split the weekend series.
Game One
Angered by Saturday's losses, the Mavericks wasted little time as they scored four runs in their first at bat as
Lauren Wedman and
Brooke Doumer both singled before reigning RMAC and NFCA Division II Player of the Week
AnnMarie Torres hit a 3-run jack over the right-center field fence. Two plays later, freshman
Camryn Mullen then added a solo home run.
The Mavericks also hit two 2-run home runs a 7-run third inning with sophomore catcher
Jordyn Hays and Doumer doing the biggest damage of a 6-hit barrage. Mullen and
Hailey Hinson also had doubles in the frame.
Meanwhile, Adair was in control retiring ten straight Orediggers before Sam Wade hit a drive to center, ruled as a double, was Mines' lone hit of the game. Adair, now 4-2, allowed just one walk and needed only 69 pitches to record her first individual shutout of the season and her career.
The Mavericks finished the game 13 hits. Hinson was 3-for-3 as eight different Mavericks tallied at least one hit against three Oredigger pitchers. Starter Sydney Marchando, who held CMU to just five hits in a complete game win on Saturday, took the loss after giving up five hits and the first four runs in the first inning. She is now 5-4 on the season.
Game Two
The Mavericks scored their first run on a bit of small-ball as Doumer hit a 1-out bunt single before stealing second and scoring on a Torres RBI single.
The Mavericks then added three additional runs in the second inning as infield singles by Mullen and Hinson, a throwing error and
Jordyn Hays allowed the Mavs to go up 2-0. An
Ashley Bradford RBI double and another Oredigger error then allowed the Mavericks to extend the lead to 4-0.
CMU would then go on to double the lead to 8-0 in the fourth inning as they advantage of four more hits and two more Oredigger errors. Torres had an RBI single in frame as all nine Mavericks in the starting lineup came to the plate.
The Mavericks then closed out the game thanks in part to a Doumer to Torres double play in the top of the fifth.
Mauser improved to 8-2 as she spread six hits and two walks while striking out two in her first shutout of the campaign and the second of her career.
The Mavs finished with nine hits, eight of which were singles, as Claire Stringfellow (2-5) took the loss inside the circle for the Orediggers after giving up seven hits and eight runs, five of which were earned, in three innings of work.
Torres and Bradford both had 2-hit, 2-RBI efforts to lead CMU's attack.
