GENEVA, Ohio— The Colorado Mesa University Maverick Diving team pushed through four men, including the No. 1 performer on both boards in
Ammar Hassan, and one women in
Ali Lange from Tuesday's NCAA Division II Championship Pre-Qualification Meet here at the SPIRE Institute Aquatics Center. The group of five Mavericks, which also includes
Chandler Livingston,
Noah Macomber and
Noah Luna, will now join 15 Maverick swimmers in the official NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships, which begin Wednesday morning.
Four other Mavericks were not able to advance amongst the group of 18 men and 22 women, who are now eligible to compete on both boards during the championships, which run through Saturday.
Hassan, the double national champion in both 2018 and 2019, scored 316.25 points on six dives off the 1-meter board in the morning to emerge victorious by 11.65 points and then made it a daily-double as he took top honors on the 3-meter board with 338.25, nearly 30 higher than the Indianapolis's Payton Staman, who finished second in each event.
Hassan, a junior from 6
th of October, Egypt, who has represented his country at the last two FINA World Championships will now go for his fifth and sixth national championships.
Meanwhile, his teammates in Macomber and Livingston also fared well on the 3-meter to book a spot in the official championships after finishing in the middle of the pack on the 1-meter. Macomber finished sixth on the 3-meter with 284.15 points while Livingston took seventh with 275.80.
Macomber and Livingston joined Hassan as all-Americans on both boards last year. Macomber, a 6-time overall all-American out of Zeeland, Michigan is now into the championships for the fourth straight year. Livingston, a junior from Pueblo, Colorado, is now making his second trip.
The top nine men on each board were guaranteed of a spot in the official championship field. Additional wild card qualifiers were then added to fill the field of 18 spots, alternating between the finish on the 1 and 3-meter boards.
That is how Luna was selected as the initial wild card as he took tenth on the 1-meter with 247.95 points, just missing out on an automatic qualification but knowing he was likely safe if any of the nine men ahead of him were to also qualify on the 3-meter.
On the women's side, Lange took a strong third on the 1-meter with a score of 262.70 points to earn one of the 11 automatic qualification spots available on each board. The sophomore from Rock Springs, Wyoming is now qualified for her first official national championships.
However, she will be without two of her teammates as senior
Brittany Dixon and sophomore
Jolynn Harris saw their seasons come to an end on Tuesday.
Dixon, who had been in each of the last three national championships, finished 24
th on both boards with scores of 200.45 points (3m) and 230.35 (1m), respectively. Harris finished 21
st on both, scoring 202.45 points on the bigger board before tallying 234.95 off the 1-meter.
In other men's results, redshirt freshman
Isaiah Cheeks finished 19
th on the 1-meter with 232.75 points while
Tanner Belliston was 26
th with 205.05.
Later, Belliston finished 15
th on the 3-meter with 241.00 points, while Luna took 16th with 240.15. Cheeks was 18
th with 232.70.
Livingston finished 14
th on the 1-meter with 241.40 while Macomber was 16

The women's 3-meter championship competition will be held Wednesday while the women will dive off the 1-meter board on Friday. The men will dive off the 1-meter board on Thursday and the 3-meter on Saturday.
Preliminary 11-dive rounds will be contested at 2 p.m. EDT (Noon Mountain) on those respective days. The top eight finishers will then come back for the finals, which will be contested during the evening session, which beings with swimming events at 6 p.m. EDT (4 p.m. Mountain).
