GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Named as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year just a week ago, Colorado Mesa University's
Davy Brown nearly assured herself of a spot in next month's NCAA Division II Championships as she highlighted a list of six NCAA "B" cut times that the Mavericks turned in during a small last chance meet on Saturday evening at the El Pomar Natatorium.
Competing against a small contingent from the Colorado School of Mines during the Grand Junction Invitational, Brown posted a time of two minutes, 0.99 seconds in the 200-yard backstroke. That time, when converted to 1:59.79 for altitude, will move her as high as 11
th on the season-long national performance list and is the fastest by a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference athlete this season. Brown had come into day ranked 27
th nationally and probably on the outside looking in for a national meet selection.
Assuming she is selected on Wednesday by the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Committee, Brown would be permitted to compete in all four of the individual events (100 back, 200 back, 200 IM, 400 IM) that she has set NCAA "B" cut times this season.
Minutes before Brown blazed to her time, Maverick junior
Noel Scott won the 100 freestyle in 51.67 seconds (51.57-altitude adjusted) to record her first career NCAA "B" cut time and move into fifth in program history. Teammate
Bret Congdon also set a "B" cut time of 52.20 seconds, which is off her RMAC Championship winning effort of 51.23, which ranks second in CMU lore.
Earlier,
Isabelle Hansson also turned in a time of 4:31.31 (4:26.31-altitude adjusted) in the 400 IM. That is just off her season best of 4:24.80. She came into the day ranked 23
rd nationally an on the bubble.
The Maverick men also had two men reach the NCAA provisional qualifying standard in their respective events. Leading the list was junior
Torsten Rau won Saturday's largest event taking the 200 free win against three other men with a personal-best time of 1:41.10 (1:39.90-altitude adjusted). Nearly assured of a spot in the national championships already, Rau will now have another option of an event to swim after reaching the 200 free standard of 1:41.49. The RMAC Championship Swimmer of the Meet is now eligible in five individual events.
CMU's other provisional qualifying effort came from
Matthew Barrett in the 200 IM. He touched in 1:51.39 (1:50.19-altitude adjusted). Barrett had entered the day 21
st nationally with a 1:49.01 season-best.
