GUNNISON, Colo. – The No. 25 Colorado Mesa men's wrestling team won six of the ten bouts but fell 24-20 to Western Colorado on Wednesday (Feb. 19) evening in Paul Wright Gym in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual finale.
Western Colorado jumped out to an 18-0 lead after picking up pins at 125, 133 and 141 pounds to start the dual out.
At 149 pounds, freshman
Dyllan Fuchs may have pulled off the upset of the night. Fuchs trailed 13-0 entering the third period, then he reached and threw a headlock and ended up pinning Giovanni Cassioppi at the 5:28 mark of the match and gave Colorado Mesa life in the dual.
Western picked up their final win of the night at 157 pounds and yet another pin to take a 24-5 lead after a team-point was deducted following the 149 pound bout.
The Mavericks won the next five bouts but it wasn't enough to overcome the four early Mountaineer pins.
Fred Green picked up a 6-0 decision win over Hunter Mullin at 165 pounds while
Seth Latham pulled off the upset at 174 pounds, winning 5-1 over No. 12 Jimmy LaConte. It was the second time Latham has beaten LaConte this season.
Nolan Krone (184) and
Donnie Negus (197) earned decision victories.
Hunter Mooring continues to wrestle well and earned a huge personal victory in the 285 pound bout. Mooring defeated Sammy deSeriere 5-2 and it was the first time he had beaten deSeriere in his career.
The Mavericks will compete at the NCAA Super Region VI tournament in Kearney, Neb. on February 29. The top three finishers at each weight will move on to the NCAA National Championships.
