TUCSON, Ariz.— Five defensive errors were costly as the Colorado Mesa University dropped their second international tie-breaker in less than 24 hours falling 3-2 to the nation's second-ranked Texas A&M University-Kingsville Javelinas in the Mavs' final game at the Cactus Classic on Saturday morning here at Lincoln Park.
The 8-inning decision left the Mavericks with a 6-4 overall record heading into their home and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener against Chadron State next Saturday. The Javelinas, who were in last year's NCAA Division II Championship series improved to 10-3 with the win.
CMU had dropped a 7-5 decision to Eastern New Mexico as part of a Friday split.
All three of the Javelinas' runs were unearned as Maverick sophomore hurler
Shea Mauser allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out three in an impressive complete game effort on her 20
th birthday.
Meanwhile, the Mavericks managed four hits, including three from lead-off hitter and left fielder
Lauren Wedman, who was 3-for-3, in the Mavs' final game in her hometown.
The Mavericks took the initial lead scoring a run in the bottom of the second on a Javelina error but gave that run back in the top of the third as the Javelinas' first two batters both reached on errors. A double steal and wild pitch then allowed the game-tying run to score.
The Javelinas then made the use of two more Maverick errors in the fifth and took a 2-1 lead on an Anastasia Leibas sacrifice fly.
However, the Mavericks would score a tying run on another sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh as
Jordyn Hays drove in
Brooke Doumer, who had singled to center to begin the rally before moving to second on a
Aislyn Sharp sacrifice bunt and to third on a Javelina throwing error.
With the international tie-breaker in place for the eighth, Leibas hit a 1-out RBI single to give the Javelinas a 3-2 lead.
The Mavericks then had the opportunity to place
Ashley Bradford on second to begin the bottom half. She moved to third on a Wedman sacrifice but was nabbed on a
Hailey Hinson fielder's choice to third just one play later.
TAMUK then intentionally walked
AnnMarie Torres to move to Hinson to second with two outs before a groundout ended the Mavericks' threat.
