GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Led by a school-record setting and NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying time from
Lily Borgenheimer, the Colorado Mesa University Women's Swimming & Diving team touched both first and second in every race and first, second and third in all but one, during a dominating season-opening dual meet win over visiting Western Colorado University on Saturday here at the El Pomar Natatorium.
The Mavericks, who exhibitioned the final four swimming events, extended their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual-meet winning streak to 23 with the convincing 190-90 victory over the previously unbeaten Mountaineers, who fell to 2-1 on the season.
Borgenheimer, a transfer from Minnesota State, where she was the 2019 NCAA Division Championship runner-up in the 200-yard breaststroke, touched first in all three of her events during her Maverick debut, posting a time of two minutes, 16.77 seconds (2:15.57-altitude adjusted) in her specialty to win by nearly 14 seconds while easily breaking Miranda Reetz's 5-plus year CMU's altitude-adjusted record of 2:17.19, which had been posted at the 2015 RMAC Championships. Borgenheimer also easily went under the NCAA "B" cut standard of 2:19.71 (2:20.91-altitude adjusted) and leads the early-season Division II performance list by more than 10 seconds. The U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier out of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, also won the 50 free in 24.95 and touched first in the 200 individual medley with a mark of 2:09.34 (2:08.14-altitude adjusted) to move take over the No. 10 spot in Maverick history for that discipline.
Her efforts were far from the only highlights for the Mavericks, who had 1-2-3 sweeps in all but one of the first 12 events before easing on the team score domination.
