Steven Howe defeated teammate
Thiago Nejm in the semifinals before falling in three sets to Billy McDermott in the final of the men's draw on Sunday at an ITA Tour: Fall Circuity by UTR event, played here at the Elliott Tennis Center.
Meanwhile, former Maverick standout
Kristen Kirby reached the final of the women's main draw while current Maverick redshirt sophomore
Maike Waldburger won all three of her Sunday matches to win the women's back draw.
Howe, the tournament's No. 3 seed, had won both of his matches on Saturday and continued his winning ways with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 win over Nejm in the morning. Howe then took the opening set of the title match with McDermott, the No. 5 seed, by a 6-4 margin. However, McDermott came back to take the second and third sets by 6-3 margins to win the tournament.
In the women's final, second-seeded Brooklynn Ross defeated Kirby, the No. 3 seed, 6-3, 6-2.
Kirby had won her semifinal, 6-2, 6-4 over Sophie Parr.
Waldburger, who had been defeated by Parr in Saturday's quarterfinal, also had a strong day on Sunday as she defeated Allyson Lowe, 8-1 before defeating CMU freshman
Kathryn Sturgis, 8-3. In the back draw final, Waldburger, who went 4-1 on the weekend, defeated Audrey O'Rear, 8-4.
Elsewhere,
Carolena Campos and
Halle Romero both lost their back draw matches on Sunday morning.
In the men's back draw,
Chapin Schott went 1-1 on the day as both of his matches went to three sets. He defeated Brandon Keller, 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (12-10) but was downed by Dario Alcala, 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 1-0 (10-4). Schott went 2-2 on the weekend.
