Mavs Begin Four Game Homestand

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The conference leading Colorado Mesa Mavericks will begin a four game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference homestand this weekend against New Mexico Highlands on Friday and CSU-Pueblo on Saturday. Both games will tipoff at 5:30 pm in Brownson Arena.

A Look at the Mavs

The Mavericks enter the weekend with a perfect 7-0 RMAC record and an impressive11-2 overall record. In their most recent outing the Mavs defeated South Dakota School of Mines and Black Hill State to extend their win streak to nine games.

CMU is led offensively by Daniella Turner who averages 16.4 points per game and has knocked down a team high 84 field goals, all while coming off the bench. In RMAC games alone Turner is averaging 22.1 points per game which leads the conference.

Junior Kelsey Siemons averages 11.5 points per game and 4.5 rebounds per game. She has recorded a RMAC leading 26 blocks this season.

Kylyn Rigsby averages 8.1 points per game and 2.2 rebounds per game, while Sierra McNicol averages 6.8 points per game and 6.0 rebounds per game. Senior Sydni Brandon directs the offense with a team high 4.3 assists per game and a conference leading 3.0 steals per game while adding 6.5 points per game.

Sophie Anderson who has started every game but two this season is averaging 3.2 points per game and 1.4 rebounds.

The Mavericks are shooting 40.9 percent from the field, 28.8 percent from the three-point line, and 66.9 percent from the free-throw line to average 64.5 points per game.

The Maverick defense is leading the nation in field goal percentage defense (31.1 percent) and scoring defense (47.5 PPG).  The Mavericks have limited opponents to 50 or less points seven times this season.

Head coach Taylor Wagner is in his eighth season at Colorado Mesa and has totaled a 179-43 record during his tenure.

Rankings

In the Women's Basketball Division II Media Poll released earlier this week the Mavericks ranked No.21 in week six of the National Poll and No.3 in the South Central Regional Poll.

Each region has six representatives that make up the regional poll. The national poll has two voters from each of the eight regions.

Colorado Mesa is receiving votes in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Top 25 which is composed of one head coach from each of the 23 NCAA Division II conferences. Tanya Haave of MSU Denver represents the RMAC.

Scouting NMHU

The Cowgirls of Las Vegas, N.M. sit in last place of the RMAC standing with a 0-7 conference record and a 1-11 overall record. They enter the weekend on a seven game losing stretch. Jordyn Lewis leads the team with 18.8 points per game. She has knocked down a team-high 35 three-pointers.

As a team the Cowgirls are shooting 35.7 percent from the field, 31.5 percent from the three-point line, and 76.3 percent from the free-throw line.

In the last ten matchups the Mavericks are 10-0 against the Cowgirls and 19-3 overall dating back to 1999. With a win on Friday the Mavericks will collect their 15th conseuctive win against the Cowgirls.

Scouting CSU-Pueblo

The ThunderWolves of Pueblo, Colo. currently sit in 11th place of the RMAC standings with a 2-5 conference record and a 3-9 overall record.  JaNaiya Davis leads the team with 15.3 points per game at a 41.7 clip from the field. Sydni Williams and Khiya Adams are next best on the team averaging 11.5 and 10.5 points per game, respectively.

Williams leads team with 7.7 rebounds per game, which sixth best in the RMAC.

As a team the ThunderWolves are shooting 36.6 percent from the field, 23.3 percent from the three-point line, and 70.9 percent from the free throw line.

The Mavericks will continue their homestand on Jan 17 and 18 against Adams State and Fort Lewis College. Both games will begin at 5:30 pm in Brownson Arena.
