GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa will have most of their roster competing this weekend up in Gunnison for the Western Colorado Open on Friday and then on Saturday at the Tracy Borah Duals.
LAST TIME OUT
The Mavericks competed at the always difficult Reno Tournament of Champions back in mid-December. They had just one placer in the tournament in
Payton Tawater who took home sixth at 157 pounds. Tawater's two losses in the tournament came to a pair of Division I wrestler in Hunter Willits of Oregon State and Matt Olguin of Fresno State.
Seth Latham and
Nolan Krone each finished one spot out of placing with Latham going 3-2 and Krone going 5-2.
DIFFERENT LINEUP
Colorado Mesa could feature a little bit of a different lineup when Saturday rolls around as the cold bug and weight plan decisions have hit the team.
Dylan Keeney will likely slide into the 133 pound slot and
Erik Contreras will bump up to 141 pounds. Keeney will likely be out for Saturday with the cold sickness.
Hayden Harris will also likely be out with the cold sickness as well.
The other option Coach
Chuck Pipher will have is whether to keep
Daniel Van Hoose at 149 pounds or to drop him to 141 pounds and place a newcomer into the 149 pound slot, something the coaching staff has toyed with.
SCOUTING THE WESTERN COLORADO OPEN
The Western Colorado Open will be another opportunity for the younger Mavericks to get more experience on the mat. The open is designed for freshman and younger wrestlers and will feature most of teams competing in the Tracy Borah Duals on Saturday.
SCOUTING THE TRACY BORAH DUALS

Colorado Mesa will also take on Fort Hays State in their first dual on Saturday with the Mavericks currently on a three match win streak against the Tigers. In their final dual they will compete against Findlay (OH) where they are 1-3 all-time with all the matchups coming in Gunnison.
