GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa men's wrestling team pitched their first-ever shutout in a 45-0 win over the San Francisco State Gators on Thursday evening in the final home dual of the season in Brownson Arena.
Not only did the Mavericks score a shutout since the program was brought back in 2006, they topped the 40-point plateau for the first-time since February 11, 2016 when they defeated CSU-Pueblo 40-6 in the Battle in Brownson.
Hunter Mooring's come-from-behind 8-6 win over Justin Ramos at 285 pounds sealed the shutout. Mooring trailed 5-2 in the third period but scored a pair of takedowns and got a 2-nearfall with just seven second left on the clock for the win.
After a decision victory by
Collin Metzgar at 125 pounds, the Mavericks rattled off four straight six-point wins including two forfeits.
Hayden Harris followed with a 5-0 decision victory then
Seth Latham made quick work of Maleselino Salt at 174 pounds earning a pin at the 1:44 mark.
It what was dubbed as the match of the night heading into the dual,
Nolan Krone made a statement. Krone defeated third-ranked Justin Pichedwatana 7-2 and the upper-hand heading into regional seedings that occur in a month. Last season, the two wrestlers split the two matches with Pichedwatana winning the dual and Krone in the regional.
Donnie Negus, ranked No. 11 nationally, picked up an 8-2 win over Andrew Herrera.
San Francisco State did not wrestle two of their nationally ranked wrestlers.
The Mavericks will be on the road in two weeks when they take on Adams State and New Mexico Highlands.
