No. 25 Mavs Travel to Front Range for Road Games

Mavericks nationally ranked for second consecutive week

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The RMAC leading Colorado Mesa Women's Basketball (16-3, 12-1 RMAC) team will hit the road this weekend for games on the Front Range against Regis University (7-12, 5-8 RMAC) and Colorado Christian (6-13, 6-7 RMAC). The game against Regis will take place Friday at 5 pm inside the Regis Field House and on Saturday the Mavs will tipoff against Colorado Christian at 5 pm inside the CCU Events Center.

All About the Mavs

With a 12-1 conference record the Mavericks sit on top of the RMAC standings. In their last outing the Mavericks defeated Dixie State and lost to Westminster. Prior to the loss against Westminster the Mavericks accumulated a 14-game win streak.

The Mavericks continued to lead the nation in defensive field goal percentage (31.5) and scoring defense (46.1 ppg). A big part of the defense this season has be accredited to Sydni Brandon who lead the conference in steal with 58 and Kelsey Siemons who leads the conference in blocked shots with 33.

Siemons is shooting 48.4 percent (45-of-93) from the three-point line this year to lead the conference which is also third best in the nation.  The Tucson, Ariz. native has recorded 69 field goals this year with 45 of them coming from beyond the arc.

Brandon, who has recorded a team high 61 assists this season, leads the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio at 3.2. She's recorded five double figure scoring game this season and is averaging 6.6 points while grabbing down a team high 5.9 rebounds per game.

Junior Daniella Turner leads the team in scoring averaging 14.8 points, which is ninth best among conference opponents. Her 113 made field goals leads the RMAC. She is currently shooting at a 40.8 percent clip from the field. In conference games alone Turner ranks fourth averaging 17.2 points per game.

After recording a career high 23 points against Dixie State Kylyn Rigsby is averaging 10.2 points per game and has drained the second most three-pointers on the team (36). She is grabbing down 2.4 rebounds per game and has recorded the second most steals (18).

Sierra McNicol averages 6.4 points per game and grabs down 5.8 rebounds per contest while Sophie Anderson averages 3.6 points per game and averages 1.5 rebounds per game. McNicol leads the team in field goal percentage at 58.7 percent.  

The Mavs are shooting 40.2 percent from the field, 31.2 percent from the three-point line, and 67.3 percent from the free throw line to average 62.6 points per game.

Head coach Taylor Wagner is in eighth season at Colorado Mesa and has totaled a 184-44 (80.7 winning percentage) record during his tenure.

National Rankings

For the second consecutive week the Mavericks have been ranked in the WBCA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll. After entering the poll last week at No. 22 the Mavs dropped to No. 25 in this week's poll which was released on Jan 28.

Total points are based on 25 points for first place through one points for. The WBCA NCAA Division II Coaches Poll Committee is composed of one head coach from each of the 23 NCAA Division II conferences.

The Mavericks dropped to No. 22 in this week's Women's Basketball Division II Media Poll which was releases on Jan 27 after previously being ranked No. 11.

In the South Central Regional Poll the Mavs dropped to No. 4 after being ranked No. 2 last week.

Scouting Regis

The Rangers enter the weekend on a two-game losing streak after falling to Fort Lewis College and Adams State last weekend on the road. Their 5-8 RMAC record places them 11th in the standings.

The Mavericks are 10-9 against the Rangers dating back to 2000 and have defeated them in the two previous matchups. In conference games alone the two teams are 8-8 against each other and the Mavericks are 3-5 when playing at Regis.

Whitney Jacobs leads the conference in rebounding grabbing down 9.8 per game. She's averaging 13.7 points per game to lead the team.

The Rangers are shooting 36.1 percent from the field, 29.6 percent from the three-point line, and 73.6 percent from the free throw line to average 63.2 points per game.

Scouting Colorado Christian

The Cougars are currently in 10th place with a 6-7 RMAC record. They enter the weekend on a one game losing streak after falling to Fort Lewis College in their most recent game. The Cougars will face Western Colorado on Friday before the game against the Mavericks on Saturday.

The Cougars are shooting 40.4 percent from the field, 30.4 from the three-point line, and 62.5 percent from the free-throw line to average 59.1 points per game. They are led by Sam Nunez who is averaging 12.5 points per game. On the glass, Lourdes Gonzalez leads the team averaging 5.7 per game.

The Mavericks are 9-8 against the Cougars dating back to 2000 but have defeated them three out of the past four matchups.

Up Next

The Mavericks will return home the following weekend for games against Westminster and Dixie State on Feb 7 and 8.

The Winter Whiteout Game will be on Feb 7 and is presented by Coca-Cola. The first 700 fans will get a free t-shirt and special prizes and give-a-ways will be presented throughout the evening. Fans are encouraged to wear white.
