Grizzlies, Skyhawks Up Next for Women’s Basketball

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa Women's Basketball program will close out a four game homestand this weekend against Adams State University on Friday evening and Fort Lewis College on Saturday evening. Both game will tipoff at 5:30 pm in Brownson Arena.

All about the Mavs

The conference leading Mavs remain undefeated in conference play at 9-0 and have accumulated a 13-2 overall record. In their most recent outing the Mavs defeated New Mexico Highlands and CSU-Pueblo to extend their win streak to 11 games.

Colorado Mesa continues to lead the nation in defensive field goal percentage (31.0 percent) and scoring defense (46.1 PPG). Sydni Brandon who leads the conference in steals (46) also leads the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.19). Brandon's 46 steals this season ranks 10th in the nation across all Division II women's basketball players.  Kelsey Siemons who also contributes to the nation's best defense leads the RMAC in blocked shots (27).

Daniella Turner who leads the Mavs in scoring, 16.4 points per game, has knocked down the most field goals in the RMAC at 99. In RMAC games alone the Boca Raton, Fla. native leads the conference with 21.1 points per game. The junior is shooting 46.3 percent from the field which is second best in the conference. 

Kylyn Rigsby averages 8.8 points per game and 2.5 rebounds per game, while Sierra McNicol averages 6.7 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game. Sophie Anderson has started all but two game this season and is averaging 3.6 points and 1.5 rebounds per game.

The Mavs are shooting 41.5 percent from the field, 29.5 percent from the three-point line, and 67.1 percent from the free throw line to average 65.0 points per game.

Head coach Taylor Wagner is in eighth season at Colorado Mesa and has totaled a 181-43 record during his tenure.

Rankings

The Mavericks improved to No. 18 in this week's Women's Basketball Division II Media Poll released on Jan 14. In the South Central Regional Poll the Mavs stayed at No. 3.

Each region has six representatives that make up the regional poll. The national poll has two voters from each of the eight regions.

Colorado Mesa is the first team receiving votes and one spot shy of the entering the poll in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Top 25. This poll is composed of one head coach from each of the 23 NCAA Division II conferences.

Scouting Adams State

The Adams State Grizzlies enter Friday's contest on a three game losing streak. This season the Grizzlies are 2-13 overall and 2-7 in conference at 14th place in the RMAC standings. From the field ASU is shooting 32.9 percent and 27.3 percent from the three-point line. At the free throw line the Grizzlies are shooting at a 64.8 percent clip.

Zakiya Beckles leads the team with 10.9 points per game and Laura Gutierrez with 9.5 points per game. Marshell Hollins, the Grizzlies next best scorer at 7.5, leads the team in rebounding with 4.3 per game.

The Grizzlies are 0-8 in away games this season.

The Mavericks have defeated the Grizzlies in the previous 15 consecutive matchups and own a 19-7 overall record against ASU dating back to 1991.

Scouting Fort Lewis

The Skyhawks sit 3rd in the RMAC standings behind Colorado Mesa and Westminster with a 7-2 conference record and an 11-3 overall record.  Fort Lewis averages the highest amount of points per game in the RMAC at 69.6 and the third best defense at 57.9 points per game.

Katrina Chandler, a former Mav, leads the Skyhawks in scoring (11.5) and assists (52). Jordan Vasquez (11.3) and Jordan Carter (10.9) are two other players who average double digit scoring for the Skyhawks and both lead the team in rebounding at 7.1 per game.

The Mavs have defeated the Skyhawks in the previous three matchups and are 17-10 overall against FLC. When playing at home the Mavs at 12-3 against Fort Lewis.

Up Next

The Mavericks will travel to Utah for games against Dixie State and Westminster College. On Jan 24 the Mavs will face Dixie State in St. George, Utah at Burns Arena and on Jan 25 the Mavs will play Westminster in Salt Lake City at the Behnken Field House. Both games will by streamed on the RMAC network and live stats will be provided by the home institution.
