GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa men's wrestling team will embark on a cross country trip to South Carolina for a pair of duals this week. They will take on first year program Lander (2-1 overall) and Coker (4-0, 1-0 Conference of the Carolinas) on Saturday in Hartsville.
LAST TIME OUT
The Mavericks competed in the Western Colorado Open and Tracy Borah Duals last weekend up in Gunnison.
Kyle Kintz claimed a title at the Western Colorado Open while the Mavericks went 1-3 in the four duals on Saturday. Injuries and illness plagued Colorado Mesa in their duals as they ended up forfeiting two weights in two of the duals and injuries kept others out of competition.
KEY ADDITIONS
The long awaited arrival of
Fred Green is here as he is scheduled to compete at 165 pounds this weekend for the Mavericks. Green is a transfer from Boise State as he wrestled for current assistant coach
Mike Mendoza at Boise.
Colorado Mesa will shuffle the lineup around a bit this weekend.
Dylan Keeney will compete at 133 pounds and
Daniel Van Hoose is scheduled to bump down from 149 pounds to 141 pounds for the remainder of the year. Enter freshman
Dyllan Fuchs at 149 pounds as he makes the small weight cut from 157 pounds where he wrestled in opens this year.
SCOUTING THE COBRAS
This will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools with the Cobras entering the dual with a perfect 4-0 mark in duals. They haven't allowed more than 12 team points in any dual they have competed in thus far.
They are led by their heavyweight in Ramon Correa who placed eighth at last month's Midwest Classic in Indianapolis. Correa enters the week ranked 11
th in the most recent NWCA National Rankings and comes into the match with a 7-3 mark.
SCOUTING THE BEARCATS
Lander is in their first season of competition under head coach R.C. LaHaye. LaHaye is no stranger to Colorado Mesa or wrestling out West. He competed collegiately at Western Colorado and began the wrestling program at Division I Grand Canyon before the program was dropped after seven seasons. He has spent the last four seasons at Newberry in South Carolina.
The Bearcats are coming off a 23-20 win over Kentucky Wesleyan last week.
197-pounder Darius Parker is their top wrestler, claiming tournament championships at the UNC Pembroke Classic and the Tornado Open. He has a 19-4 record but a common opponent with Colorado Mesa in Western Colorado's Kris Davis. Parker fell to Davis at the Midwest Classic by pin.
WHAT'S NEXT
Colorado Mesa will return home for a pair of duals. On Friday, they will host CSU-Pueblo for the annual Bank of Colorado Battle in Brownson at 6pm before a Saturday tilt with Colorado School of Mines at 5pm.
