DENVER— The Colorado Mesa University Maverick Tennis teams advanced three singles players and a pair of doubles teams into the championship semifinals of their respective brackets after the first day of the MSU Denver Invitational, which got underway Saturday here at the Regency Athletic Complex.
In the Women's Singles A draw, sophomore
Maike Waldburger went 2-0 in singles play defeating Helena Steenberg of MSU Denver by a 6-4, 6-1 score in the quarterfinals after blanking her CSU-Pueblo opponent in both sets of her opening match.
Kristen Kirby,
Laura Alsing and
Rebecca Osterberg all went 1-1 on the day in that bracket.
In women's doubles play, Kirby and Alsing advanced to the semifinals winning their first match 6-1 over the Colorado College duo of Lillly Schmachtenberger and Haley Capersen before receiving a walk-over win. Meanwhile, two of CMU's other three pairings each went 1-1 on the day as Osterberg and Waldburger lost a tiebreaker in their first match before bouncing back for a 6-0 win. They will face teammates
Carolena Campos and
Lauren Thomas, who recorded a 6-1 win in their second match.
In men's doubles, CMU's
Moises Cure and
Alain De La Bastide squeaked by in a quarterfinal match, winning a tiebreaker after receiving a bye in the opening round.
Meanwhile, in the Men's Singles B Draw, freshman
Tyler Landen dropped just two games in a pair of 6-1, 6-0 victories on the day. Senior
Mitchell Steadman is also in the semifinals after a pair of Saturday wins.
The tournament will wrap up on Sunday.
