FORT COLLINS, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University's Torsten Rau won the collegiate wave of the Horsetooth Open Water Swim on Sunday completing the 2.4-mile race at Horsetooth Reservoir in a time of 50 minutes, 48 seconds, nearly two minutes ahead of his nearest competitor.
Maverick teammate Logan Ellis was fifth overall in 53:57 while Robyn Naze was tenth overall and the fourth woman to finish with her time of 54:55.
The Mavericks had seven finishers— four men and three women, who got a jump start on the 2019-20 season that will begin in earnest next month when the Mavericks and new head coach Mickey Wnder host the Intermountain Shootout on Oct. 4-5 at the El Pomar Natatorium.
Isabelle Hansson (55:53) and Shannon Feran (57:09) finished 14th and 25th overall for the Maverick women.
The other Maverick men were Jackson Wuthrich, who completed the course in 57:16 and Noah Beaver, who finished in 57:30.  They placed 28th and 35th overall, respectively.
