Mavs place three on First Team squad

COMMERCE, Texas— Led by South Central Region Player of the Year AnnMarie Torres, the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks had a region-leading six selections to the D2CCA (Division II Conference Commissioner's Association) NCAA Division II Softball All-South Central Regional Teams that were announced Wednesday morning.

Torres, a junior from Wheat Ridge, Colorado who was selected at the first base position, sophomore designated player Alexa Samuels and senior utility player Kaila Jacobi were all first team selections and move on to the national ballot for all-America awards.  Meanwhile, senior shortstop Kellie Mrofcza, junior outfielder Brooke Doumer and senior pitcher Kimbri Herring all received second team plaudits.

Nominations and voting for the awards, determined by position, were conducted by sports information directors from the region, made up of the Heartland, Lone Star and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conferences.

Torres, who had been named as the RMAC Player of the Year by the league's coaches last week, has now been on the First Team D2CCA All-South Central Region team during all three of her career.  She was also a D2CCA Third Team All-American in 2018.

She leads the RMAC and is currently ranked in the nation's top 10 for total RBIs (3rd, 67), on-base percentage (4th, .594), walks per game (7th, 0.80).  She also leads the RMAC and stands just outside the top national top 10 in batting average (12th, .466) and slugging percentage (13th, .842).

Samuels, who hails from Arvada, Colorado, had had a solid year hitting nine home runs while driving in 38 runs while slugging at a .790 clip in just 81 official ab bats spread over 40 games, including 23 starts.  That slugging percentage is fourth best in the RMAC.

She is third on the Maverick squad in home runs and fourth in RBIs and was named as the Fastpitch News NCAA Division II and RMAC Player of the Week in separate weeks earlier this season.  She is hitting .358 overall and was also on the First Team All-RMAC squad last week.

Jacobi leads the RMAC in home runs with 16 and has driven in 60 runs to rank third in the RMAC.  She is eighth and 11th nationally in those respective categories.  The Scottsdale, Arizona product who has played at catcher and third base, is hitting .329 overall.  She received her fourth overall All-RMAC honor last week.

Mrofcza leads the RMAC with 65 runs scored and has cranked out a team-high 32 extra-base hits while hitting .396 and slugging .704 this season.  The Colorado Springs, Colorado native also has 20 doubles, eighth home runs and 59 RBIs to her credit and has now been named to the D2CCCA all-region team twice in her career.  She was a First Team selection as a sophomore in 2017 at the utility position and went on to earn honorable mention All-America honors as well.  Mrofcza ranks sixth in the country for runs per game and is ninth for doubles.

Doumer, a Parker, Colorado native, has scored 64 runs in her debut season with the Mavericks after transferring from Western Nebraska Community College.  She is hitting .389 and has 19 doubles to rank 14th nationally.  She has also drawn 35 walks and has been hit by a team-high 11 pitches, which has aided her solid .525 on-base percentage, second best in the RMAC behind only Torres.  She also has five outfield assists to her credit and was on the First Team All-RMAC squad as well.

Herring, a senior from Stansbury, Utah, has posted an impressive 21-4 record and 2.37 ERA from inside the circle this year.  She was named as the RMAC Pitcher of the Year and has tossed a RMAC-leading eighth shutouts and has recorded 123 strikeouts while holding opponents to a .209 batting average in 144 2/3 innings of work this season.  She has below a 1.00 WHIP and is now a 2-time all-region honoree.

As a team, the Mavericks are currently ranked 11th in the NFCA Division II Coaches' Poll, and have compiled a 45-9 overall mark while winning their fourth straight RMAC title.  They enter the NCAA Division II Tournament as the fifth seed in the region and will square off with No. 10 and fourth-seeded West Texas A&M in their opening game on Thursday.
