ANOTHER ONE
The Colorado Mesa Mavericks claimed their eighth straight RMAC Regular Season Championship last Thursday in a 9-6 win over Dixie State. It was the program's 26th overall regular season title. The title gives the Mavericks hosting duties at Suplizio Field where they were 21-3, giving them a 20-win season at home in 14 of the last 17 seasons in the friendly confinds of Suplizio Field.Â
RMAC HONORS
The Colorado Mesa Mavericks claimed a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference high seven players on the all-conference list including three of the major awards. Caleb Farmer, Hunter Douglas, Jordan Stubbings, Will Dixon and Hutson all claimed first team accolades while JR McDermott and Spencer Bramwell each earned second team honors.
SITTING ON A RECORD
Senior right hander JR McDermott is currently tied for the all-time mark with 24 wins. He is tied with Kyle Davis who had 24 wins from 2009-14. McDermott has been pitching in relief as of late due to injury but is slated to likely make a start during the RMAC Tournament this week. The senior had seven wins during his freshman season and nine wins in his sophomore season.Â
SUPER SAVER
Senior Will Dixon was named the All-RMAC first team after leading the conference in saves with 10. He has recorded a save in five straight appearances. Dixon is tied for second on the single season saves list. He trails just Keith Nelson who had 16 saves during the 2007 season.Â
YOUTH MOVEMENT
Andrew Morris was named the RMAC Freshman Pitcher of the Year after his stellar regular season in the Mavericks rotation. The Boulder, Colo. native went 4-1 with a 4.05 ERA in 44.2 innings pitched and 53 strikeouts. He will likely pitch the first game of the RMAC Tournament.Â
THE STREAK OF 40
The Mavericks finished last season with a 43-16 overall record making it six straight seasons that Colorado Mesa has won 40 or more games. With their win over Dixie State on Friday evening, the Mavericks made it seven straight seasons of 40 wins. The high mark during the streak came in the 2017 season where the team won 50 games and reached the NCAA Championship Final Four that included a win over No. 1 ranked Delta State.Â
NATIONAL RANKINGS
Colorado Mesa remains atop the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper coaches poll for the fourth straight week. Prior to being ranked No. 1 this year, the Mavericks spent just one week in the No. 1 slot in that poll. The Mavericks moved up to No. 4 in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association poll. The updated Perfect Game poll was not updated when the game notes were posted.
THE SKIPPER
Head coach Chris Hanks enters his 21st season guiding the Mavericks and has an impressive 872-353 record, the most wins from a coach in program history. The Carbondale, Colo. native won his 850th game as the Maverick skipper on March 16, 2019 in an 11-0 win over No. 9 Colorado School of Mines. He has led Colorado Mesa to three region championships, a feat that has earned him ABCA Region Coach of the year three times now. Last season, he earned his 10th RMAC Coach of the Year award while leading the Mavericks to the regular season and tournament titles.
UP NEXT
Regardless of the outcome of the RMAC Tournament, Colorado Mesa will likely earn a spot in the NCAA South Central Regional. The winner of the RMAC Tournament will receive the conference's automatic berth into the tournament. If the Mavericks make a deep run in the RMAC Tournament they will likely host one of the two three team sites.Â
