GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Former Colorado Mesa All-American baseball player
Paul Schoenfeld was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the MLB Draft on Sunday (July 12).
Schoenfeld becomes the 55
th Colorado Mesa student-athlete selected in the MLB Draft and the first since Kannon Handy was selected in 2023. He was taken in the eighth round (236 overall) by the Arizona Diamondbacks to become just the third Maverick since 1993 to be selected in the draft's first 10 rounds.
In his three years with Colorado Mesa, Schoenfeld batted an even .400 with 36 doubles, 16 home runs, and 108 runs driven in. He stole 34 bases and had an OPS over 1.100. He earned consensus All-American honors and First Team All-Region and All-RMAC honors during his senior season.
He played in three NCAA Tournaments and helped Colorado Mesa win three RMAC regular season and tournament title during his time in Grand Junction.
The Wichita, Kan. finished his NCAA Division II eligibility in 2025 before transferring to West Virginia for his extra Junior College season of Division I eligibility. Schoenfeld started all 64 games for the Mountaineers and batted .327 with four home runs and 52 RBIs while making highlight reel catches in the outfield. He helped lead West Virginia to the College World Series for the first time in their program's history.
