CHADRON, Neb.— Senior pitcher
Kimbri Herring recorded two wins, including a 3-hit shutout as the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks ran their season-long winning streak to 14 games with 6-0 and 12-7 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference softball wins over Chadron State College on Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks also hit three home runs and five doubles during the doubleheader as they improved to 29-6 overall and to 22-3 in conference play while the Eagles, who had a 4-game winning streak of their own entering the day, fell to 10-25 overall and to 7-18 in the RMAC.
Game 1
The Mavericks scored five runs in the opening two innings while Herring went the distance while striking out four Eagles to record her RMAC-leading seventh shutout of the campaign.
The Mavericks, who were held to just four hits, wasted little time in getting out to an early lead as lead-off hitter
Brooke Doumer was hit by a pitch before stealing second and moving to third on a passed ball after
Kellie Mrofcza drew a walk. Doumer then scored on a RBI ground out by
Kaila Jacobi. The Mavs then doubled the lead when Mrofcza scored on an Eagle error.
The Mavericks then erased an error turning a double play in the bottom of the first before
AnnMarie Torres blasted her team-leading 11
th home run of the season, a 3-run shot, to make it a 5-0 game after the top of the second.
Meanwhile, Herring retired ten straight Eagles into the fourth inning and had another 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the fifth.
The Mavericks would then add an insurance run in the top of the seventh completing the scoring on a RBI double by
Alexa Samuels.
Torres, who was 2-for-3 with a walk, and Samuels, who was 2-for-4, were the lone Mavericks to record hits in the game off Eagle starter Cassidy Horn, who did give up four walks and two other free passes to Doumer, who was plunked on each of the first two plate appearances.
Game 2
The Mavericks had to come back from 3-0 and 5-2 deficits as they scored six runs in the top of the fourth to take an 8-5 lead. The Eagles then came back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to close within 8-7 before the Mavericks tacked on the game's final four runs to take the victory.
Herring (12-3) earned the win in relief of starter
McKenzie Surface as she threw four innings while giving up just three hits and two runs.
Meanwhile, the Mavericks had eight different players combine for 11 hits as a team, including home runs by Samuels and
Jordyn Hays in the all-important fourth inning.
Hays led that 5-hit inning off with her fourth home run of her rookie season before
Lauren Wedman and
Tegan Woosley both recorded singles while moving up on an
Ashley Bradford sacrifice. They would then both score, minutes before Samuels hit a 3-run blast to complete the rally and chase Horn (5-5) from the circle.
After the Eagles pulled within 8-7 through five innings, the Mavericks doubled their lead to two in the sixth as Jacobi hit a RBI double to plate Mrofcza, who had reached on a 1-out walk.
Herring then allowed just one walk in the final two innings to shut the door. She also benefited from a Torres 2-run single in the seventh.
The Mavericks will look to extend their winning streak further on Sunday when they play another doubleheader against the Eagles, starting at 11 a.m.
