LAKEWOOD, Colo.— Kaila Jacobi hit a go-ahead 2-run home run to help lift the 11
th-ranked Colorado Mesa University Mavericks to a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Softball Championship clinching victory over second-place Colorado Christian University on Friday here at Lakewood Park.
The Mavericks, who have now won each of the last four and a conference-record extending 12 overall titles, won that game 4-3 and then came back to defeat New Mexico Highlands University by an 8-0 score in their second game of the RMAC pod series weekend. The latter win, highlighted by home runs from
Kellie Mrofcza and
Lauren Wedman, the freshman's first collegiate blast, and a shutout by senior pitcher
McKenzie Surface gave the Mavericks 40 wins, a mark they have now reached in each of the last four years as well.
Colorado Christian Game
Trailing 3-1 after CCU's Kacie Burger hit her second home run of the game to break a 1-1 deadlock in the bottom of the fourth, the Mavericks scored three runs in the top of the fifth and then held on to claim the title clinching victory.
With two outs in the fifth after a double play, Mrofcza hit a double to left center before
AnnMarie Torres drove in her RMAC-leading 61
st run of the year to plate Mrofcza.
Just five pitches later, Jacobi then hit her 15
th home run of the season over the left field fence to put the Mavericks up for good, 4-3.
Meanwhile,
Kimbri Herring (18-3) allowed just one baserunner in each of the final three innings to close out her 18
th victory of the season.
Both she and CCU pitcher Kenzie Mattey (15-5) allowed just five hits in complete game efforts.
Herring recorded four strikeouts.
Early on, the Cougars went ahead 1-0 on a 1-out home run by Burger in the second inning. However, the Mavericks tied the game minutes later in the top of the third when
Alexandria Dufour was hit by a Mattey pitch before stealing second. She then scored when third baseman Stephanie Day made an error at third base allowing
Brooke Doumer to reach.
However, the Cougars would get out of a potential big inning with the first of two double plays.
Burger then hit a 2-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the fourth to put the Cougars ahead.
New Mexico Highlands Game
The Mavericks wasted little time in scoring against the Cowgirls as they plated three runs in the top of the first, the first on a Torres sacrifice fly and two more thanks on a
Sarah Staudle single up the middle.
Mrofcza then led the third inning off with a home run before singles by
Bailey Kleespies and Staudle set up
Hailey Hinson, who drove in Kleespies with a sacrifice fly that made the score 5-0.
Mrofcza then hit a RBI double in the fifth to make the score 6-0 before Wedman's 2-run homer in the seventh completed the scoring.
Defensively, Surface was in control, spreading six allowed hits over what was her third individual shutout of the year. She also struck out six Cowgirls and walked just one while improving to 18-1.
Eight different Mavericks combined to record ten hits, including four for extra-bases, in the victory, their 25
th in the last 26 games.
The Mavericks are now 40-7 overall and 33-4 in RMAC play. CCU, which came back to crush NMHU, 13-1 in five innings in the final game of the day, is 34-13 overall and 26-8 in conference play. NMHU is 8-29 overall and 7-24 and now eliminated from RMAC Tournament contention.
The Mavericks, who play the Cowgirls at 1 p.m. and the Cougars at 3 p.m. on Saturday, will host the RMAC Tournament as the top seed at the CMU Softball Stadium, starting Thursday (May 2).
