Maverick men end season on high note

CMU seniors each go 2-0 during 6-1 win over CSU-Pueblo

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Lucas Martin and Alain De La Bastide came from 5-2 down to win their No. 1 doubles match in a tie-breaker as the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks won the doubles point before riding that momentum to a 6-1 overall season-completing men's tennis victory over visiting Colorado State University-Pueblo on Friday here at the Elliott Tennis Center.

Martin was one of three CMU seniors who all went 2-0 on their final day of their collegiate career as they and the team as a whole ended the season on a high note.

The Mavericks (5-15) won their last two matches of the year and avenged 4-3 loss to the ThunderWolves (3-14) just 13 days ago in Pueblo.

On Friday, Martin and De La Bastide came roaring back to win four straight games to take a 6-5 lead over Edward Cooper and Richard Garcia before claiming the 7-6 (7-4) victory in the tiebreaker.  That gave the Mavericks a 1-0 team lead after the No. 2 and 3 doubles were split with 6-4 decisions.

Max Lindqvist and William Agritelley, the Mavs' other two seniors, won their No. 2 match over Daniel Garcia and Cade Boedeker while James Ryan and Danta Alcala defeated CMU's Steven Howe and Moises Cure at No. 3.

Martin was the first to finish in singles as he scored a comfortable 6-2, 6-1 win over Alcala at No. 5 singles to win his 99th and final collegiate match.

The Mavericks then took a 3-0 lead when freshman Christian Albrechtsen finished a 6-1, 6-2 win over Richard Garcia in the No. 4 match.

Lindqvist then capped his career with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Daniel Garcia at No. 1 singles to officially clinch the team victory.

De La Bastide also won 6-2, 6-1 over Ryan at No. 3 singles while Agritelley won his No. 6 singles match when Boedeker retired up a set but down 5-3 in the second.

The Mavericks improved to 2-1 this season at home with the win and have now posted a winning record at home in each of the last five years, going a combined 23-7.
