WICHITA FALLS, Texas— The Colorado Mesa University Mavericks dropped a 7-0 neutral-court men's tennis decision to St. Edwards' University, Thursday afternoon here at Hamilton Park.
The Hilltoppers are currently ranked second in the latest (Jan. 16) Oracle/ITS South Central Regional Rankings and improved to 8-3 with the win after picking up a 4-1 win over fifth-ranked MSU Denver earlier in the day.
The Mavericks ranked seventh in the region fell to 2-6.
"St. Edward's is a deep and talented team. We competed well but just didn't come through on the big points, Maverick Coach
Dan MacDonald said.
The HIlltoppers, who have three nationally-ranked singles players on the roster, two of which played, swept the doubles matches to gain the early 1-0 lead and the then won all six of the team-scoring singles matches in straight sets. CMU, which did get an exhibition singles win out of
Steven Howe, was the closest in the No. 3 and 6 positions.
At No. 6 singles,
Christian Albrechtsen took Chase Morehouse to a first-set tiebreaker before falling 7-6 (8-6), 6-2. Meanwhile,
Moises Cure dropped a 7-5, 6-2 decision to Gabriel Zuniga, who was playing behind the nation's 16
th and 50
th ranked players in Anish Srinketh and Luis Diaz.
Srinketh was pushed by CMU's
Max Lindqvist at No. 1 singles but prevailed, 6-4, 6-4. Diaz won his No. 2 singles match over
Alain De La Bastide, 6-4, 6-2.
Chase Bartlett, who is ranked 11
th in the country in singles, did not play in singles but did team for a 6-1 doubles win over Cure and
William Agritelley in the top flight.
Howe won his exhibition match over Zac Robinson, 6-4, 6-0.
CMU has an equally challenging day ahead of them on Friday. The Mavs will play weekend hosts Midwestern State, ranked first in the region and 14
th nationally, at 9 a.m. CST (8 a.m. Mountain) and then Cameron, ranked third in the region and 24
th nationally, at 3 p.m. CST (2 p.m. Mountain).
