Mavs fall to Hilltoppers

WICHITA FALLS, Texas— The Colorado Mesa University Mavericks dropped a 7-0 neutral-court men's tennis decision to St. Edwards' University, Thursday afternoon here at Hamilton Park.

The Hilltoppers are currently ranked second in the latest (Jan. 16) Oracle/ITS South Central Regional Rankings and improved to 8-3 with the win after picking up a 4-1 win over fifth-ranked MSU Denver earlier in the day.

The Mavericks ranked seventh in the region fell to 2-6.

"St. Edward's is a deep and talented team.  We competed well but just didn't come through on the big points, Maverick Coach Dan MacDonald said.

The HIlltoppers, who have three nationally-ranked singles players on the roster, two of which played, swept the doubles matches to gain the early 1-0 lead and the then won all six of the team-scoring singles matches in straight sets.  CMU, which did get an exhibition singles win out of Steven Howe, was the closest in the No. 3 and 6 positions.

At No. 6 singles, Christian Albrechtsen took Chase Morehouse to a first-set tiebreaker before falling 7-6 (8-6), 6-2.  Meanwhile, Moises Cure dropped a 7-5, 6-2 decision to Gabriel Zuniga, who was playing behind the nation's 16th and 50th ranked players in Anish Srinketh and Luis Diaz.

Srinketh was pushed by CMU's Max Lindqvist at No. 1 singles but prevailed, 6-4, 6-4.  Diaz won his No. 2 singles match over Alain De La Bastide, 6-4, 6-2.

Chase Bartlett, who is ranked 11th in the country in singles, did not play in singles but did team for a 6-1 doubles win over Cure and William Agritelley in the top flight.

Howe won his exhibition match over Zac Robinson, 6-4, 6-0.

CMU has an equally challenging day ahead of them on Friday.  The Mavs will play weekend hosts Midwestern State, ranked first in the region and 14th nationally, at 9 a.m. CST (8 a.m. Mountain) and then Cameron, ranked third in the region and 24th nationally, at 3 p.m. CST (2 p.m. Mountain).
