LA MIRADA, Calif.— Freshman
Moises Cure won a 13-11 third-set tiebreaker at No. 2 singles to lift the Colorado Mesa University Men's Tennis team to their first win of the spring season as the Mavericks snapped a 10-match slide in thrilling fashion with a 4-3 Monday evening win over the Biola University Eagles at the Biola Tennis Center.
The Mavericks won the doubles point taking two of the three matches and then split the singles matches to improve to 3-11 while the Eagles, ranked ninth in the Oracle/ITA West Region rankings fell to 6-6.
Cure personally snapped an 11-match singles losing streak that had dated back to September with his win over Logan Blair. He saved six match points after falling behind 6-3 in the decisive tiebreaker.
"Moises and the whole team competed great and showed great composure under pressure," Maverick Coach
Dan MacDonald said.
Also claiming wins for the Mavericks in singles were
Alain De La Bastide and
William Agritelley in the fourth and sixth flights, respectively. De La Bastide's win was in straight sets (6-2, 7-6 (7-3)) over Quentin Lau while Agritelley came from a set down to defeat Erik Martinez, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-0.
The Mavericks had drawn first blood as De La Bastide and
Lucas Martin claimed a 7-5 win in the decisive No. 1 doubles match to give the Mavs the early 1-0 team advantage. That was made possible by Agritelley and
Max Lindqvist, who scored a comfortable 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles avenging the Eagles' No. 3 doubles win by the same score.
The Mavericks will wrap up a 4-day stint in California on Tuesday in San Diego when they face the Point Loma Nazarene University Sea Lions (4-4), riding a 3-match winning streak, including a 4-2 win over Biola on Saturday and a 4-3 triumph over Division I Navy last Wednesday.
