GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The nation's 22
nd ranked Colorado Mesa University Mavericks scored 23 more runs and pounded out 26 hits, including seven for extra-bases while completing a doubleheader and series sweep with 8-0 and 15-5 wins over the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks on Monday afternoon at the CMU Softball Field.
The Mavericks out-scored the Skyhawks 50-5 in the series and improved to 11-3 overall and to 4-0 in the RMAC while FLC fell to 5-13 and 0-4 in the loop. The Mavericks have now won 21 straight games in the rivalry dating back 2015.
After driving in 11 combined runs in Sunday's 12-0 and 15-0 wins, CMU junior first baseman
AnnMarie Torres went 5-for-6 with two walks and six RBIs. She had two doubles and a 3-run home run, her fifth of the campaign, in the second game and finished the series hitting .800 (12-15) and slugging 1.467 while recording an incredible 17 RBIs.
Kaila Jacobi also homered on Monday while
Jordyn Hays,
Sarah Staudle and pinch-hitter
Lexie Comer all recorded doubles in the second game.
Meanwhile, the Mavericks had some stellar pitching efforts from seniors
Kimbri Herring (5-1) and
McKenzie Surface (2-0) who recorded the wins.
Herring, who had a 1-hit shutout on Sunday, allowed just two hits in four innings of shutout ball in the opening game while Surface threw 4 1/3 innings of nearly perfect softball in Game 2 after coming on as a reliever for starter
Paige Adair. Surface, who now has 72 career wins, retired 11 straight Skyhawks today and 14 overall after striking out the side in one inning of work on Sunday allowing just one free pass, a seventh-inning hit by pitch, throughout her stint today.
As the series was originally scheduled to be played in Durango, the Mavericks were once again the visitors on the scoreboard and batted in the top half of each inning. They took advantage from the start as Jacobi drew a bases-loaded walk in the first inning of the morning game to go ahead 1-0.
CMU then scored three more runs in the second as
Kellie Mrofcza and Torres both had RBI singles before a RBI fielder's choice from
Tayah Gerber put the Mavs up 4-0.
The Mavericks then went up 5-0 in the third when Jacobi led off the inning with a home run. They then scored three more runs in the fourth thanks to a Skyhawk error and a 2-run single by
Bailey Kleespies to complete the scoring.
Meanwhile, Herring was in control striking out three Skyhawks while giving up just two hits while needing just 53 total pitches to earn the win.
Freshman
Shea Mauser then threw a 1-2-3 fifth inning to complete the mercy-rule win, which saw the Mavericks record 11 hits, including 10 singles.
In the final game of the series, the Mavericks scored three runs in four different innings jumping out to a 6-0 lead thanks to a RBI hits from Jacobi, Hays and Staudle in the first inning before a 2-run single by Torres highlighted the second.
The Skyhawks, who had been held scoreless for seven-plus games and 37 total innings in the last two years against the Mavericks, then hit three home runs, two of which were off Kylie Hefley's bat, in the second and third innings to close to within 6-1 and 9-5 of the second game.
Surface, the second winningest pitcher in RMAC history, then came in and promptly ended the third inning with a fly out before mowing down the Skyhawks in order in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Meanwhile, the Mavericks had responded in the top of the third with a 3-run homer by Torres to lead 9-1 at that point.
After a 4-run Skyhawk third, the Mavericks then added a run in the top of the fourth after pinch-hitter
Alexa Samuels led off the inning with a single before scoring two plays later on a pinch-hit double by Comer. They then tallied two more runs in the fifth to pull ahead 12-5 on a RBI groundout by Gerber and a fielding error after a 1-out Mrofcza walk and Torres double had helped set the table.
The Mavericks then scored three more times in the seventh to complete the 50-run series after putting up 42 runs in last year's series sweep of FLC.
The Mavericks combined for 15 hits in the second game while Mrofcza drew four walks to tie a CMU single-game record, which had also been matched by
Brooke Doumer on Sunday. Mrofcza also scored four runs in the game.
The Mavericks will remain at home next weekend as they will square off with 13
th-ranked Dixie State (9-2) in a top-25 showdown of the top two teams in the RMAC's Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Trailblazers are newcomers to the RMAC and went 3-1 in a home pod on Sunday and Monday after edging the 3-time defending champion Mavericks in the preseason poll.
Doubleheaders are slated for noon on Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday.
