ST. GEORGE, Utah— The Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 neutral-court encounter of two NCAA Division II South Central Region top-10 teams on Saturday afternoon here at the Dixie State Tennis Courts.
The Mavericks, ranked seventh in the region, fell to 2-5 overall while Western New Mexico University, ranked ninth, came from behind to improve to 2-2.
CMU won the doubles point as
Max Lindqvist and
Christian Albrechtsen won their No. 3 match by a 6-2 margin before
Lucas Martin and
Alain De La Bastide defeated Niko Barr and Oscar Serra by the same margin at No. 2.
However, the Mustangs would take five of the six singles matches to claim the victory.
De La Bastide claimed CMU's lone singles win with a No. 4 triumph over Serra. He won an epic first set 7-6 (10-8) before having a much easier time in a 6-1 second set win. Albrechtsen also took his No. 5 singles match against Barr to three sets, winning the first 6-1 before falling 6-1 and 6-2 in the second and third.
Barr's win clinched the overall dual.
The Mavericks will have a scrimmage against MSU Denver on Sunday morning and will then play the Roadrunners once again on Mar. 1 in their home opener.
