#12 Mavericks to host Yellowjackets on Leadoff Weekend

SEASON OPENERS
The Mavericks opened the season on another high note by going 3-1 facing a pair of former West Region rivals. CMU swept two games from the Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks while splitting two games with the Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles. Interesting to note, the only two times the Mavericks have beaten the Golden Eagles has come in St. George, Utah.

Colorado Mesa batted .333 over the weekend with an OPS of .908 while striking out just a little over four times a game.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Colorado Mesa's JR McDermott was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week after his performance in the Mavericks season opening win over Northwest Nazarene. McDermott pitched five innings and allowed just one hit and one walk while strinking out nine in his season debut. He threw just 54 pitches and allowed just the two baserunners in the game.

The start was McDermott's first since February 23, 2018 at Cal Baptist when he suffered a season ending injury to his pitching arm.

WE ARE FARMERS
Sophomore Caleb Farmer picked up right where he left off last season as a hitting machine. Farmer hit .500 in the season opening series with Cal State L.A. and Northwest Nazarene with three doubles and a triple. The San Jacinto, Calif. native had and an OPS of1.349 which was second best on the team over the weekend. Farmer played shortstop in all four games and batted in the two-hole while leading the team in runs driven in with eight.

Farmer was an All-RMAC First Team selection a year ago as a freshman.

STUBBY
Not to be outdone by his fellow sophomore, Jordan Stubbings led the team in batting average at .529 during the opening weekend. The Parker, Colo. native batted third and hit three doubles, moving his career total to 14 in just a season and four games while hitting third this past weekend.

LEFTY-RIGHTY COMBO
The lefty-righty combo of Jett Wodiuk and Garrett Hutson could be devastating this season the duo combined for four shutout innings pitched and allowed just one hit, one walk and six strikeouts with each earning a save in each of the first two games of the season. Wodiuk last pitched for the Mavericks during the 2017 season while Hutson made his Maverick debut after transfering in from Division I Abilene Christian.

DOUGIE
Senior outfielder Hunter Douglas had a season-opener to remember. The Lubbock, Texas native hit a pair of home runs in the season opener against Northwest Nazarene.

THE STREAK OF 40
The Mavericks finished last season with a 43-16 overall record making it six straight seasons that Colorado Mesa has won 40 or more games. The last time the Mavericks didn't win 40 games was in 2012 when they went 39-16 and lost in the Central Regional in Mankato, Minn. The high mark during the streak came in the 2017 season where the team won 50 games and reached the NCAA Championship Final Four that included a win over No. 1 ranked Delta State.

NATIONAL RANKINGS
Colorado Mesa is ranked nationally in the three major polls to begin the season as the favorites to win the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Mavericks are as high as No. 4 in the Perfect Game poll and as low as No. 17 in the NCBWA poll. The polls won't change for another couple weeks while all teams will have games under their belt.

THE SKIPPER
Head coach Chris Hanks enters his 21st season guiding the Mavericks and has an impressive 834-345 record, the most wins from a coach in program history. He has led Colorado Mesa to three region championships, a feat that has earned him ABCA Region Coach of the year three times now. Last season, he earned his 10th RMAC Coach of the Year award while leading the Mavericks to the regular season and tournament titles.

UP NEXT
Colorado Mesa will head out on their longest road trip of the season when they head to Fresno, California to play a four-game series with the PacWest Conference's Fresno Pacific. The Sunbirds are 2-3 on the season thus far and take on another West Region opponent this week in Western Oregon at FPU Diamond.
