GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa wrestling team won six bouts including four pins in a 32-17 win over Chadron State in Brownson Arena in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual.
Newcomer Colin Metzgar got the dual off on the right foot with a pin at 125 pounds at the 3:57 mark of the bout. Metzgar had a 9-0 lead before turning the Eagle wrestler to his back to secure the first pin.
Chadron State earned back-to-back decision victories at 133 and 141 pounds.
Daniel Van Hoose stopped the streak at 149 pounds with a second round pin of Caleb Haskell to give the Mavericks a 12-6 lead and the Mavericks would never look back.
The Mavericks won a pair of matches over nationally ranked opponents in the dual meet win.
Payton Tawater earned a pin at the 4:57 mark over Chase Clasen at 157 pounds. Tawater, ranked No. 10 at the weight, picked up a takedown then was able to turn Clasen in a cradle for the pin. Clasen entered the match ranked No. 5 at 149 pounds.
Junior
Donnie Negus earned maybe the biggest win of the night, upsetting No. 10 ranked Wade French 5-0 at 197 pounds. The Elizabeth, Colo. native earned a pair of takedowns and worked up over three minutes of riding time in the win. French won the NCAA Super Region title at the weight a year ago.
Seth Latham and
Nolan Krone each earned bonus point wins at 174 and 184 pounds respectively. Latham picked up a second round pin while Krone earned a full match tech fall.
The Mavericks will head to Nebraska for the Loper Open, hosted by Nebraska-Kearney, next weekend.
