Box Score GREELEY, Colo. – Colorado Mesa opened up their second straight week on the road with a match against an in-state Division I foe in the Northern Colorado Bears. The Mavericks dropped the first match of the weekend 5-2 to the Bears with many close matchups.
Colorado Mesa took the doubles point after winning at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
Lucas Martin and
Alain De La Bastide defeated the Bears team of Kyle Pease and Smalley, 6-4 while
Max Lindqvist and Mitch Steadman earned a 7-6 (2) win.
Division I rules give just one point for winning the best two out of three doubles matches while in Division II every double match counts for a point.
UNC was able to secure five of the six singles matches.
Lindqvist earned the straight set win at No. 1 singles with a 6-0, 6-4 win over UNNC's Connor Finerty.
Lucas Martin played a hard-fought match at No. 3 singles but wound up falling to Michael Kritzinger 7-6 (3), 6-7 (8), 6-4 in a match that lasted over two hours. Kritzinger won the first set 7-6 (7-3) in the tiebreaker but Martin rebounded winning the second set in a tiebreak 7-6 (10-8).
The Mavericks will head to Pueblo to take on a whole host of South Central Region opponents beginning with No. 19 Midwestern State at 3pm tomorrow (Mar. 23).
