PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Colorado Mesa men's tennis team took on a pair of tough opponents to open the Firestorm Classic at Paseo Racquet Club.
The Mavericks fell to NCAA South Central Region foe St. Edward's 8-1 to open up the Firestorm Classic.
Colorado Mesa's lone win of the match came at No. 2 doubles where the pair of
Lucas Martin and
Alain De La Bastide defeated Davor Ivkovic and Logan Buignet, 8-6.
De La Bastide fell in a close match at No. 4 singles where he fell in three sets to Buignet 6-2, 5-7, 11-9.
Later that day, Colorado Mesa fell to Sonoma State 7-2 to close out the first day of the classic.
The duo of Nick Farmen and Will Agritelley defeated Nate Oppenheim and Sean Alves at No. 1 doubles, 8-3, giving the Mavericks the early lead.
It was short lived as the Seawolves took the final two doubles matches and the 2-1 lead heading to the singles matches.
The Mavericks won just one of the singles matches as De La Bastide took home the win at No. 4 singles. He defeated Igor Pissarenko in three sets, 7-6 (8), 3-6, 10-7.
Agritelley (No. 2) and
Lennon Braaten (No. 5) each lost their singles match in three sets.
Colorado Mesa will continue on in the Firestorm Classic tomorrow with matches scheduled against the host Arizona Christian and former RMAC foe Western New Mexico.
