GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Morgan Bean,

Ammar Hassan and
Torsten Rau all won individual events while sophomore
Chandler Livingston became the second Colorado Mesa University diver to set a NCAA qualifying point total in as many days, the highlights of a strong day of swimming and diving action for the Mavericks on Saturday at the Intermountain Shootout here at the El Pomar Natatorium.
The Mavs also had a total of 11 top-3 finishes throughout the day as they wrapped up the 2-day season-opening meet against NCAA Division I opposition. The BYU Cougar men defeated the Mavericks, 266-124 and claimed a 254-139 victory over Air Force in the double-dual team scores. Air Force also defeated the Mavericks, 245-147.
Meanwhile, BYU also went 2-0 on the women's side claiming a 267-125 win over the Mavericks while out-pointing Colorado State, 213-180. The Mavericks fell to the Rams, 244 ½-147 ½.
Rau won the 500-yard freestyle in 4 minutes, 44.11 seconds and then came back to finish a strong third in the 200 back with a time of 1:56.74.
Meanwhile, Bean was victorious in the 100 butterfly, touching the wall in 50.42 seconds.
On the diving boards, Hassan was again strong winning the 3-meter event with 387.50 points, 92 ½ more than the NCAA qualifying standard for six dives. He had broken his own 1-meter school-record on Friday evening. Meanwhile, Livingston took third with 295.45 points, just above the NCAA qualifying mark of 295.
Dixon won the women's 1-meter competition with 249.15 points while
Kelsey Vreeman finished second with 238.90 points. Both were just shy of the NCAA qualifying standard of 255.
Elsewhere,
Sierra Forbord had another strong day taking third in the 100 free in a time of 53.19 seconds while leading off the 200 free relay team, which started the session with a third place finish at 1:37.75.
Natalie Saul also took fifth in the 100 free at 54.10 while swimming the third leg on that relay.
Samantha White anchored that squad and then came back to place fourth in the 50 breaststroke at 30.98, just off her own school-record of 30.92.
Junior
Ginger Bryant moved into the No. 3 spot in program history for the 50 breast as she took seventh at 31.71 while freshman
Natalya Nelson moved into a tie for seventh in Maverick annals at 32.74.
Jake Simmons (27.94),
Jacob West (27.98),
Travis Newland (27.98) and
Ty Conklin (28.24) also moved into the Maverick's top 10 for the men's 50 breast.
Danielle Jefferies also recorded a top-3 finish as she finished third in the 100 fly in 58.44 seconds. She also took fifth in the 200 fly at 2:11.18.
The Maverick men will be on the road twice next week competing at Utah on Thursday at 4 p.m. in Salt Lake City before squaring off with BYU once again on Friday at 3 p.m. in Provo.
They will then join their female counterparts at Air Force on Saturday, Oct. 20, which will be CMU's next women's meet.
