USAFA, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University men's and women's swimming teams both picked up wins over Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rival Colorado School of Mines and also held their own against Division I opponents on Saturday at a multi-team meet on Saturday here at the United States Air Force Academy's Cadet Natatorium.
The Maverick women had 15 top-3 finishes and defeated the Orediggers, 237-62 while falling by a 161 ½-137 ½ score to the host Falcons and by a 166-131 score against the SEC's Vanderbilt in the quad meet.
Brittany Dixon won the 1-meter diving event while the Mavericks earned seven second and seven more third place finishes.
On the men's side,
Torsten Rau won the 1,000-yard freestyle while
Chandler Livingston claimed a share of the victory on the 1-meter diving board. As a team, the Mavericks crushed Mines 208-86 but fell to the Falcons, 209-91, in the tri-meet.
Dixon scored 241.43 points on her six dives on the 1-meter board as freshman teammate
Ali Lange finished second with 218.55 points. Dixon also finished second on the 3-meter with 220.28 points while
Samantha Cochrane finished fourth on the 1-meter with 217.28 points before coming back to take third in the 3-meter event with 215.48 points.
In the swimming events,
Sierra Forbord was the runner-up in both the 100 (53.19) and 200 (1:55.63) free and anchored the Mavs' 200 free relay team to a second place finish (1:38.57) as well.
Meanwhile,
Maddie McClain finished second in the 1000 free (10:55.32) and third in the 500 free (5:19.75).
Grace Payton took second in the 200 back with a time of 2:08.21 and also led-off the Mavs' 200 medley relay team to a third place finish with a time of 1:48.06. Freshman
Sarah Fillerup was fourth in the 200 back (2:10.08) and finished third in the 100-yard distance at 59.34 seconds.
Danielle Jefferies also claimed a pair of third-place finishes in the butterfly events finishing the 100 in 59.01 and the 200 in 2:10.95 while swimming the fly leg of the medley relay as well.
The Maverick men also had 15 top-3 finishes with Rau claiming three of them. The German sophomore's 1000 free time was 10:01.35. He also finished second in both the 500 free (4:51.54) and 200 back (1:59.11).
In the 100 free,
Justin Fell took second at 47.92 while
Zander Minano finished third in 48.39 seconds. Minano also took second in the 50 free in 21.68 and turned in a relay lead-off split of 21.19 to lead the Mavs to a second place finish in the 200 free relay (1:26.08).
Lane Austin also claimed a second place finish, swimming the 100 back in 52.86 seconds.
Eric Berg,
Morgan Bean and
Matthew Barrett also claimed third place finishes with Berg finishing the 100 back in 53.84 and the 200-yard distance in 2:00.65. Bean was third in the 100 fly at 51.99 and fourth in the 50 free at 21.79 while swimming legs on the Mavs' runner-up 200 free and 200 medley relay teams.
Barrett was the breaststroke leg on the medley relay team, which finished in 1:35.32 and tied for third in the 100 breast individual event at 1:01.14.
On the diving boards, Livingston scored 257.70 points to share top honors with Air Force's Cole Armagost on the 1-meter. The Maverick sophomore also scored 236.70 points on the 3-meter.
CMU's women will continue action against RMAC foes next week swimming at Adams State on Friday and at Western Colorado on Saturday.
The Maverick men will be off until hosting the A3 Performance Invitational from Nov. 16-18 along with their female counterparts.
