PROVO, Utah— Led by a pair of event wins and NCAA qualifying scores from redshirt sophomore diver
Ammar Hassan, the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks won six events in a Friday afternoon men's swimming and diving dual at Division I BYU here in the Cougars' Richards Building Pool.
BYU won the dual 168-124, a much closer score than in last weekend's Intermountain Shootout competition.
Hassan scored 348.90 points over six dives on the 3-meter board to win by 17 ½ points and took first place points on the 1-meter with a 6-dive score of 303.70 points.
The Mavericks' other wins came in the pool as reigning Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Week
Torsten Rau won the 1000-yard freestyle in 9 minutes, 54.28 seconds while
Justin Fell touched first in the 100 butterfly with a clocking of 52.57 seconds.
Freshman
Matthew Barrett also won the 200 individual medley in 2:00.88 while
Morgan Bean, Fell,
Noah Beaver and
Parker Giles swam a time of 1:27.15 in the meet-closing 200 free relay to claim that official win behind the Cougars' exhibition "A' squad.
The Mavericks also had runner-up finishes from
Landon Ellis in the 200 fly (2:00.90), Rau in the 500 free (4:46.19),
Morgan Bean in the 100 fly (52.61),
Jake Simmons in the 200 IM (2:02.63) and
Chandler Livingston in 1-meter diving (179.80).
CMU's "B" 200 free relay squad of
Travis Newland,
Jake Gremaud,
Jackson Wuthrich and Rau also placed second in 1:29.82.
The Mavericks will continue their season in eight days (Saturday, Oct. 20) against another Division I opponent in Air Force.
