GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – For the second straight night, the dual would come down to the final bout. Last night, CSU-Pueblo's heavyweight Cody Johnson got the best of Colorado Mesa's
Clayton Voytilla. Tonight, Voytilla would get even.
Voytilla squared off with Mines' Weston Hunt in the final bout of the evening with the dual score, the winner giving their team the victory. The sophomore delivered a 7-4 victory earning three takedowns in the bout and giving up just the four escapes in the win, giving the Mavericks the 20-18 dual victory over the Orediggers.
The two teams split the bouts with each side winning five, but the Mavericks had three bonus point wins to the Orediggers one.
Freshman Will Moss continued to impress giving the Mavericks their first victory of the dual at 141 pounds with a come from behind pin of Taylor Gambil at 6:46. The pin evened the dual at 6-6 after three bouts.
John Daniel followed at 149 pounds with a 3-1 win over Ryan Carpenter, giving the Mavericks their first lead of the dual at 9-6.
Sophomore
Payton Tawater delivered an 18-6 major decision at 157 pounds giving the Mavericks a 13-6 advantage.
The Orediggers came back winning three of the next four bouts to take the lead into the final match.
Bruno Nicoletti had the lone win in that streak at 174 pounds where he earned a 10-1 major decision over Meeker's TJ Shelton.
Colorado Mesa heads out on the road next weekend to face Cal Baptist in Riverside, Calif. on Thursday.
