GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – It came down to the last match.
With the score tied 18-18, CSU-Pueblo's Cody Johnson earned a first round pin over Colorado Mesa's
Clayton Voytilla to give the No. 5 ThunderWolves the 24-18 win in the dual on Friday evening in the fourth annual Battle in Brownson.
This was the first loss for the Mavericks in the Battle in Brownson but it wasn't without a fight.
After dropping the first two matches, freshman Will Moss stepped onto the mat in front of 968 fans. Moss delivered a 7-1 victory over No. 7 ranked Clay Archer. Moss earned a takedown and a two-point near-fall right at the end of the first period. The Kingston, Pa. native gave up an escape in the second period and got an escape and a takedown in the third period over the nationally ranked Archer.
The ThunderWolves picked up a win at 149 pounds before the match of the night.
At 157 pounds, Colorado Mesa's No. 4
Payton Tawater squared off with previously ranked Kyle Fantin of CSU-Pueblo. Tawater came away with the 11-5 win in overtime over Fantin to improve to 5-0 on the season. The two wrestlers finished 5-5 at the end of regulation but the sophomore Tawater earned a takedown and four-point nearfall in overtime for the win.
CSU-Pueblo's JaCobi Jones earned a pin at 165 pounds before the Mavs went on a three-match win streak to close in on the dual score.
Bruno Nicoletti and
Adam Visconti earned decision victories at 174 and 184 pounds respectively with
Jareb Aziz picking up a third period fall to knot the dual score at 18-18.
Colorado Mesa will be back in action tomorrow (Jan. 20) evening as they take on Colorado School of Mines in the final home dual of the year. First match is slated to begin at 6pm.
