PUEBLO, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa men's tennis team dropped a pair of 7-2 decisions today (Sept. 15) to open the 2017 fall season at Centennial High School.
In the day's opener, the Mavericks dropped a tough 7-2 decision to the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers. The Mavericks picked up a win at No. 3 doubles and at No. 6 singles.
The duo of
Max Lindqvist and Nick Farmen earned a 9-8 (3) decision over Johnnie Carmichael and Logan Orr at No. 3 singles to give CMU their first point.
Farmen also picked up the Mavericks other point at No. 6 singles in hard fought win over Alvaro Moreno. The two split the first two sets forcing the tiebreak where Farmen battled for a 10-4 victory.
In the nightcap, MIAA member Emporia State came away with 7-2 win over the Mavericks. The Hornets took all three doubles matches while the Mavericks pulled out wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles.
Lucas Martin earned the Mavericks win at No. 4 singles, defeating Matheus Mota in three sets. Martin dropped the first set 4-6 but battled back for the second set win 6-3 and the seesaw tiebreaker set 14-12.
Alain De La Bastide picked up CMU's other win with another three set win over Hornet Paddy Cameron. De La Bastide fell in the first set 3-6 but won the second set tiebreak 7-6 (5). He came back, fought for the third set tiebreak, and won 10-7.
The Mavericks will return tomorrow for the final two matches of the weekend, taking on Texas-Permian Basin and Newman.
