GRAND JUNCTION, COLO. – The No. 14 Colorado Mesa University softball team swept the doubleheader against Adams State Saturday (March 4.).
The Mavericks won game one 8-0 and the second game 10-2.
Maggie Manwarren led off the first game with a walk and would score on a sacrifice fly by
AnnMarie Torres.
Tyneesha Houkamau led off the second inning with a single up the middle and would come around to score on a double to right field by
Kellie Mrofcza.
AnnMarie Torres hit a two-run homer just inside the left foul pole to push the CMU lead to 4-0 after three.
The Mavericks scored four runs in the fifth to end the game early by run rule. The Mavericks scored their four runs on five hits, highlighted by a two RBI double by
Kaila Jacobi.
McKenzie Surface (6-3) scattered three hits and struck out seven in the complete game win for CMU.
Mesa wasted no time scoring in game two, plating three runs on four singles in the first inning.
Adams scored its first two runs of the series on a two-RBI single by Kalin Johnson in the top of the second.
The Mavericks batted through the order in the bottom of the second scoring six runs on five hits and one error.
Kaila Jacobi highlighted the inning with a double to center field that drove in three runs.
CMU scored its final run in the fourth inning thanks to heads up base running. Jacobi singled to center field but would advance to second after
Abby Toller headed home.
Kimbri Herring (6-4) earned the win for CMU giving up two runs on two hits.
Colorado Mesa (10-4, 3-2) will close the series with Adams State Sunday (March 5).
